View Full Version : Lack of experience as a DC may have cost us that game.

I thought the offense was not able to get going in part by their lack of first downs and due to TOP because of their ground game.
I understand we have injuries on the DL and that we are thin, but there are other methods of loading the box to stop the run and he either did not think about it or he was not really paying attention to the amount of players they put and pulled onto the LOS to run.
If he new we were weak on the DL why not help them in the box? In my eyes, he's learning on the job and I hate when we do that. Everybody seems to want to plan for the future. Everytime we do this, the future learns on our dime and moves on after he has learned his lessons.
PS C34.. for once I thought you were spot on.

The scheme,3 down lineman, was not great but there were times we were there and let the RB drag us 4-5 yards. We also missed 25 tackles in the game. I think that was as big a difference as the scheme.

I hate to agree with Bo Bounds but this morning he said he knew five experienced G5 DCs running outstanding defenses in the G5 that would have crawled on the bellies all the way to Starkville for our DC job.
The missed tackles killed us more than Skittle-Do running us over. We had the QB sacked on three or four blitzes but we couldn't tackle for shit. We had WRs making the sticks for a first down after slipping through a tackle that should have stopped them cold.

Insane... I know they changed the tackling rules like what back in 2015 but shoot it's like we are the only team that cannot tackle worth anything.

The LB play also needs to improve. Way too many missed tackles.

All I know is that at some point in the 3rd, he did load the box and we had a few 3 and outs on them. It gave the ball back to the offense and helped them get into a groove.
I also confirmed that the QB was 50% and had a total of 69 yards in the air. That Scaboodabooboo rushed for 7.9 yards per carry.
What DC in this league would not have seen that early and moved to shut down the run by playing the numbers? You put 7 on the line, we will have 7 or 8 in the box.

The erroneous offensive PI call also was a big part of us losing, that was a 10-14 point swing.

The problem is that we should have started with 7 or 8 on the line. The guy can't throw. That is the scouting report on him and was known before we stepped on the field Saturday night.

yep! We were the LSU of 2020. The DC refused to adapt and Ark learned from it. rush 3, drop 8. Everybody that will play them from now on will play against their run.

We had to miss more than 25. I remember us missing 4 on one play. And it wasn?t an outlier.

Agree on a lot of the points here were my issues on game.
The 14pt swing in the first half - bad call PI cost us points, likely TD and confidence, etc. Then the QB fumble which in some games could be called down or still throwing. I've seen worse.
Poor tackling - yep in many spots but not all. We got some guys getting minutes that from the AZ game have no business. We are playing a lot of guys on D like we are trying to figure out who to play or something. Seems we are lost coaching wise here. Not only missed tackles but not containing. One QB pressure by Williams QB got outside the CB Jones for the run to TD. Should have been an easy sack. Jones takes the right angle and contain and Williams gets an easy sack. Williams abused his man. Again that is coaching. A D1 CB should never make that mistake and I think Jones has got the tools.
Not having the right gameplan and not adjusting is one of the most troubling things. We are Ned and first reader in that dept. Must be fixed ASAP to salvage the season. No reason we should have lost to ASU. We adjusted in 2nd half and stopped them cold up the middle many times. They scored 3 in 2nd. Do this in the 1st and we win easy.
Yes we are down talent wise on D but has been going down for years. But we do have some talent on D. Dinkins and Anderson being out hurt. We still got some talent. Javion W. could not be blocked. He drew double and triple at times. He pancaked an OL into the running on one play. He abused the tackle when he lined up outside. He isn't the only one either. #40 when he came in made things happen at LB. Isaac at S got it done. Blanton was solid.
That game played at DWS is an easy win for us. Our D while not good on run Sat, played well enough to win - gave up 23 but the O got to do something in the first half. The D also must adjust before it is 30-3.

All this and really worried about our lack of fundamentals in regard to lack of tackling skills.
