If your family was looking at donating a decent amount of money (5 figure plus) in memory of a family member that passed away very unexpectedly who was a DIE HARD MSU athletics fan? from football to baseball to woman?s volleyball? it didn?t matter.
Would you do it through the Bulldog Initiative, Bulldog Club, etc?
Give me some thoughts on this. Thank you.

NIL
Bulldog Club will get theirs on the backs of season tickets etc. and donations from the usual crowd.

I'd have to agree NIL currently.

Honestly, I would split it 3 ways, St Jude Children's fund, Sierra Club & then NIL.

This is the correct answer.

If they graduated from State then I would give to the academic side. Mine would be to COBI. This would have a better use of the money then giving to a bunch of kids that may or not be there this time next year.

I would assume you are talking about NIL and not St. Jude.

If we're talking specifically about donations to State, NIL is far more important, not even close.

Giving to NIL is giving directly to the players, who for the most part have no allegiance to MSU. So if you want to give to MSU, then give to the Bulldog Club or the academic side of the house or create a scholarship for some needy student(s).
St Jude and/or Shriners is also good as stated above.

If it was my money, and it was a lot of money..... capital improvements. Or at least something that includes my loved ones name. I'm not sure how much a pillar is at DwS, but you can sponsor a pillar and your family name is there for your family to remember.
Also, talk to a tax accountant. You get no tax break for giving to nil. You can claim tax deductions for gifts to academic scholarships and a slight deduction for BC contributions.

And anything to a certain chase team working on expanding a tower cam network across the state is 100% tax deductible.

Oh no you're talking about doing something that might save lives. Dammit man some 18 year old who hasn't done shi* in his life so far needs a million dollars to come here so he can prostitute himself next year to the highest bidder.*** And this pertains to every D1 school in the country.

Setup an endowed scholarship. You pay a lump sum up front, and they sit on it for a few years as it earns interest (5 years I think). They then use future interest to pay tuition for the person who is granted the scholarship. I think you're allowed to stipulate to some degree those that are eligible for the scholarship to (home town maybe). So lets this family members name was John Doe from Tunica. You buy the endowment and then a few years down the road some kid from Tunica goes to State tuition free on the "John Doe Memorial Scholarship. After that kid graduates, then others from Tunica could apply for that scholarship. The logic is the endowed amount is never spent and just the interest they earn off of it is enough to pay tuition. So long after Mr. Doe's family and friends are also gone, people can still be receiving the "John Doe Memorial Scholarship". I have a friend who has done a couple (1 at Florida State and 1 at Ole Miss). I think he told me the Ole Miss one was $50k to offer a full scholarship. I'd think State's would be a similar amount.

A small donation to an inner city school's powerlifting program led by an Elitedawg is always a good way to help society and make a difference.

I wonder if you could do this for NIL. That way it has the name attached and isn't a one and done kind of deal

Would it be better to just put in a private account for NIL and earn more money for it? Then donate each year in their name?
That ruling about NIL not having tax incentives affects things, so I wonder if universities are maneuvering a work around for that .

It should be a marketing expense but what are they marketing for random people?
