I've never known less about an MSU team in 20+ years. I'll still watch, but it just isn't the same anymore

So this is where I've struggled connecting with some people on this stuff. My excitement has never waned. Outside of Dak, I never really got emotionally attached to a player. It's always been about the name of the front rather than the one on the back. Maybe I'm different though.

Is the NIL stuff stupid? Ehh.....in it's current state being funded by the fans.....yes. But overall, no. I mean do you really think someone like Dak got a fair trade in his 4 years? No. His impact for the Unversity and the town as a whole is in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Players deserve to be paid, it just was never researched and they opened the Pandora's box on the stuff. There's ways to reel it back in and the schools having to foot some of the bill is the first step in that.

Plus people’s level of fandom changes. We get lives, have children, make more $, spend $ on other things etc.

When I was at MSU during our hoops run, I could name just about every player in the SEC. And most games weren’t even televised. I was invested. Same for football. If ours wasn’t the JP game or on ESPN I was finding the radio station to listen.

But times are different now. I’m 50 years old. The sports world is WAY oversaturated with choices. I’m finding I care less about all sports but I’m still an MSU fan and alum and I care. But I’m not offended that I don’t know all the players these days. It’s the business of it and as long as I still get excited about college football kickoff, I’m in.

Some of you have just got to lighten up and take it easy. We are and always are going to be an SEC wannabe. It is the way it is. We can have success on occasion just like we have seen during the Jackie, Dan and Leach eras. But it’s not going to be sustained and we are going to get our butts kicked by the big boys more often than not. If you can’t handle that then you just need to jump off now. It’s not getting better.

The biggest problem is that because of scUM’s preseason accolades, some of you are losing your minds. Let it play out and watch them fall on their face. It’s going to be GLORIOUS

There’s a lot of truth in that. I think their success and our dishevelment in the last 18 months has caused a lot of angst and apathy. Unfortunately there is one main difference in our fan bases for about the last 15-20 years. 90% of their fan base notices the problem and starts to help the 10% of the fan base that make the decisions in any way they can. 90% of our fan base notices the problem and then bitches about the 10% not doing enough while they are sitting on their hands about it.

Same. We have a coach who embraces modern football, both schematically and from a business view. He is going to struggle at times both because our personnel and due to him being a 40 year old rookie coach in the best conference in college football. But hope abounds. Stay the course.

Could you imagine how much bank Scott Westerfield would have made in NIL for kicking the game winning field goal in the 1999 Egg Bowl?

Or Nikoe Whitley for causing Bo Wallace to fumble in the 2013 Egg Bowl?

I completely agree. As a fan, I cherish the 1980, 1991, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2007, 2010, 2014, and 2022 TEAMS more than the players as individuals.

And let's be honest- players have been getting paid forever. I'm actually glad MSU can now legally do so without the program getting put on probation and sold out by the compliance department and AD.

That's the real problem with MSU fans in general. MSU fans give up on the program too quickly and want to make huge drastic changes without allowing enough time for a program to grow.

I'm always ready for football in general, but MSU football is rapidly getting left behind in the league's dust.......including our neighbors to the north. Lebby will try his best and will likely make us interesting to watch at times, but it's going to take a miracle for us to remotely catch up. We're a budget program operating in a luxury league.

I’m interested from a curiosity standpoint. I hate that I’ve become so apathetic tho. I’m your typical geezer that doesn’t like a lot of change I suppose.

College football is actually near an all time high for ratings. The reason it’s doom and gloom around here is not because of NIL or the portal or any of that. People are just using all of that as an excuse to make themselves feel better about how big of a disaster our program has been since the day we announced the hiring of Moorhead. I actually am not Lebbys biggest fan but I feel bad for him our fans are so disinterested and we have basically given up. I live in an area with Pitt, Penn State and WVU fans and none of them have this mentality. It’s just sad

Ole Miss has been about to "leave us in the dust" for 30 years and it just hasn't been the case.

They've got a great coach. No doubt.
They're gonna be good this year. Absolutely. Better than us.

But they're taking advantage of their up years. We've missed our last 2. Once because we hired a loser in Moorhead and then our coach died. We need to stick with Lebby for several year, consistently recruit, and then be ready for our next one which will be 2-3 years.

Disaster of a program? You feeling that all the way up there in Pittsburgh, eh? Get real.

Agreed, but watch what happens if State gets good. Even your care factor will get elevated. It's been tough having what is it? 4 HCs since Mullen with 2 interim stinks in there for Knox? We starving for some stability.

If what I think is true, this is OM's year. They better do it now or they won't for awhile. Meanwhile, State is starting to look like it may have a recipe for success. I like the Lebby hire and State's approach to acquiring players that utilizes, HS, portal and JuCo to keep a competitive roster.

I am not saying national title contender but ... I am fully expecting to be a team that has it's up cycle years that can make the playoffs.

Sir, we were 8-4 with a third place finish in the west and a New Year's Day Florida bowl 20 months ago. Then our coach died. Otherwise we would have been 8-4-ish again.

It is a disaster because we are picked last by Phil Steele and others as the worst P4 team this year. Moorhead was a joke from day 1 I knew all about his antics and it didn’t take a genius to research it. Cohen created a big mess with our football program from coaching hires to NIL etc. Leach was a solid hire but his recruiting is designed only for his system so once he is no longer coaching it can lead to a major roster issue which is what we are experiencing right now.
