For all involved. My wife and I and some friends were involved in a terrible boating accident this weekend down here in Louisiana. My best friend was driving the boat. He was ejected and died on impact. He has 4 children all under 12. My wife had a broken femur. They have placed a titanium rod and the surgery went well. I had surgery on a broken hand yesterday and will be having another surgery this afternoon at some point to repair my elbow which has several breaks. We covet all the prayers we can all get. Blessings bulldog fam!

I live on Old Hickory Lake up here (Cumberland River). The boat traffic is ridiculous. Only time I'll put my boat on the lake is midweek early morning or mid afternoon. Then out of there before the traffic gets bad.

Here's a good thread on Tiger Droppings with some details:

https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/o-t-lounge/deadly-boat-accident-on-tickfaw-river-at-midnight-2-killed-6-injured/114298429/

Basically sounds like a speed boat T-boned a pontoon at around 52 mph. Prayers to all involved.

My condolences, every once in a while, I'll get stuck on the Rez after dark, It terrifies me. Too many dunks who don't understand the rules of the water. Several years ago, we stayed too long up river and had to come down during the dark. This coincided with the first day of gator hunting season, I couldn't tell you how many near misses. John boats with way too much motor on them were zooming across the channel, never looking for oncoming traffic.

Horrifying. I've never been stuck on the Rez or up here on Cumberland at night. I would be terrified because I know the kind of people that are out there. Someone dies in the lake up here almost every weekend.

unfortunately there are not any qualifications to meet to operate a boat. too many stupid people on the water at all hours. And boat navigation lights are hard to see except for a head on approach while ideling the engines.

Johnson85
08-07-2024, 02:15 PM
Man, hate it for y'all. Before looking up the details, I had a guess as to how it happened. It's really hard to have a serious boat collision when people are paying attention and not acting reckless.

I'm not a "government should do something" type of person typically, but it is crazy how stupid people get on the water. Every weekend you see people that clearly don't know how to operate a boat (not even talking about drinking, just somebody with no sense that clearly bought a boat and went out with no training or thought about how a boat should be operated or safety). You already pretty much can't ski anywhere on the weekend. Being in the water at night is dangerous because you're even more at the mercy of the most reckless idiots. It would be nice if there was some requirement to know the basics of operation before getting out there. Te boater's safety course isn't nearly enough to actually operate a boat anymore than just having a written test for somebody that's never operated a vehicle would be.

Tiger threads has a post on it that's informative for thsoe interested. https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/o-t-lounge/deadly-boat-accident-on-tickfaw-river-at-midnight-2-killed-6-injured/114298429/page-13/

I'm sure some of it is rumor filled and not quite right, but pretty hard to have a serious wreck like that without some recklessness or a sudden and serious failure to the steering system.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's exactly how MS driver's licenses work now. Written test only since COVID. Unless it changed in the last year.

Not meaning to preach (no pun intended). Boat boater safety is something I get railed up about. I have operated everything from a pirogues to major yachts. I’ve navigated inland rivers and all over the Northern Gulf of Mexico. I have found that inland lakes and rivers have the worst boat operators. I use to live on a big lake and the near miss accidents and shear stupidity of boat operators are simply amazing.

Bent knee for you preacher.

Can concur on this, my youngest get his 2 years ago, no driving with an officer. That may have changed even before covid. The parent has to sign a statement that they've risen x numbers of hours (or miles) with the learner driving. I can't remember if HS driver's ed is required or not.

My wife and I are still recovering. It’s been slow but steady. We miss our friend terribly but our prayer is that this is the start of justice being served, however we harbor no hatred in our hearts. Our trust is that whatever is fair in this case is what transpires. We sure do appreciate all the prayers!
