For the good of the game and MSU we needed a 15 scholarship reduction, instead we get a 20 increase. Lawyers!!

105 is ridiculous. If you have 4 deep at each position on offense and defense that's 88! Geez!

What the powers to be need to look into is the unregulated, out of control portal. Stats I have read state that about 45% or so of these guys are not even finding a landing spot. So much for a scholarship opportunity that can lead to a better future if the "student athlete" cares. What is the % of college athletes making the NFL or NBA and how long is the average career?

Ross Dellenger on X says, 105 FB, M/W basketball 15, Baseball 34, Softball 25 & Volleyball 18. Some big changes.

1) that's a lot more male cholarships added than genial, doesn't title IX require more be added for women to make the numbers match?

2) this sounds very expensive for small schools. Most athletic departments do not operate in the black as it is, I worry that this rule change will lead to smaller schools having to shut down their programs entirely. Like if UAB did away with football again. I wonder if when it's all said and done if there will actually be more kids on scholarship nationwide after that's factored in.

3) More football scholarships only serves to lock in the have and have nots even more. It increases the significance of NIL and recruiting high ceiling players, and decreases the significance of proper talent evaluation, talent development, and roster balancing. You can have a lower "hit rate" on the players you sign and still have a complete 2 deep. You can fail to recognize your future needs at a position and still wind up with good players there just because the extra 2 allowed an extra 2 players at that position to be taken. It was already bad enough with the Portal and NIL, but this makes it even worse.

Huge changes. Ironic that the portal and NIL brought about the changes in baseball that have been a long time coming. It's my understanding the scholarship money provided by the athletic department will count toward the court decided revenue sharing.

The unintended consequences of 105 scholarships for football is hard to put into words.

This is a million times worse for us than the portal or NIL combined. We can?t compete with this rule.

This will destroy the 2 lower levels and JUCO football. No wonder JSU was pushing to move up to FBS level.

Of course another thing that will happen is the have nots will not be able to even fill the 105 football schollies. They aren't going to sign a bunch of Zero Stars after the Top 20 programs sign all the 5 and 4 stars and most of the 3 stars as well. They will just ride with 85-90 schoolers like they always have. Hell, last year 8 of the 32 5 star recruits red-shirted and only 4 of the other 24 made much of an impact as freshmen. Imagine being 5th and 6th string, never playing a down in 5 years and getting 2 or 3 championship rings.😳😳😳

I'll wait and see what else is coming but it stupid as hell where we stand today. That could change later.

Yep. It could definitely get stupider!

College football which is the least competitive major sport out there is about to even get worse. I'm getting pretty sick of the entire thing. Needed a reduction in scholarships but now getting an increase of 20? Crazy. About to just say screw it and just watch the NFL. At least there they have rules to allow all teams a chance to compete.

I kind of figured everyone's walk ons were getting NIL these days. Meaning everyone was essentially "on scholarship".

My guess is we'll start rolling the dice on some guys that would have gone to USM and backfill down the road with the portal to get some of the "Alabama, LSU, Georgia, etc is my dream school" guys.

The portal is a pretty significant difference between today and Bear Bryant's era. Back in the day once you were at Bama you were stuck there if you couldn't make it because of the transfer rules. Unless you went JUCO after your freshman year there but that likely very rarely happened or worked out for those players back then.

yes, and the Bear basically had unlimited scholarships. He might have had over 200 on a free ride, most never played.

That was his game plan and it worked.
He would sign kids that he knew would never see the field in a game that involved Alabama.....on either side of the sidelines!
He would sign kids to keep from having to play against them, and that's what's gonna happen again.
That's 20 players that could be playing for teams like State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Arkansas, etc.... but will not because the schools that have unlimited resources to pay them to not play.
And further muddy the transfer portal.
The players are the ones that suffer.

Yes a friend of mine played running back for the Bear. He was from Hattiesburg and Bear signed him only to keep him from playing State or Ole Miss.

Bear called him aside one day at practice and told him “son you are the best running back I’ve seen with no talent”

Agree, this is rolling college football back 60 years to the player hoarding days.

Exactly, where most of them could have contributed at other schools. That's the point!

The portal isn't always going to be wide open though. Once they become employees there is going to be more of a 2 way contract and that's when the hoarding is going to become obvious and detrimental to everyone that isn't a blue blood.

I kind of find it hard to believe that players would go for that.

I read an interesting article about this today. It talked about how most teams essentially have 120-130 players on the team and with the new rule the thought is that they may allow teams to practice with up to 120 or so in fall practice and then when it comes time they essentially cut the roster down to 105 by a pre-set deadline.
