Hot take: DJ should stay in school for one more year.
Jordan has legitimate 80-grade raw power and speed but teams don't know what to do with him; he doesn't play center field or steal bases and is a below-average hitter with below-average pitch selection.
He?s a top 10 pick without those negatives. Good coaching could help with all of those, and his signing bonus would double or triple. Plus he?s just a sophomore so he?d still have leverage.
Moot point but still.

Thats the problem with the age 21 rule. Both Dirtbag and Jordan need another year in college and under the 3 years mandatory rule it used to be it would be perfect for them.
It's hard to tell DJ to turn down late 1st round money or early 2nd when its there and guaranteed

No body is going to turn down being the 27th pick to come back and "possibly" move up to the top 10. That kind of idiocy needs to be ridiculed.

DJ is guaranteed to get at least 2.5M. Gambling that to for a possible 5MM payday aint worth it.

Hines is the one to watch. He cost himself alot of damn money this season. If he falls out of the Top 10 rounds- which is very possible- he could make more in NIL coming back to us or somewhere else than what he could get as a 13th round draft pick

That would be a nice boost

Why would he take 80K to ride a bus in High A ball instead of taking 200K to play SEC ball with all the bells and whistles? That would be stupid

Hines wasn't good this year, but I'm not exactly thrilled with rolling into next season with a guy that hit .239 in the Big South Conference. I know he had an injury or whatever, but give me a pissed off Hines over him all day, any day

It really isnt dumb with NIL. No he is not going to get MLB money but he will be living like a king with what he will get in NIL plus increase his draft stock

I get the impression he just wants to move on.
I do agree with you by the way. I don't think he's going to get a ton of bonus money no matter what he does.

How do we have fans that can't understand this? If you are offered $2mil today or "possibly" $5mil a year from now (with no guarantees), you take the $2mil today.
I'm guessing the high end of is NIL value is $200k. So add that factor in. Take $200k now with the possibility of getting $5mil in a year or get $2mil today. You're an idiot if you do anything other than take the $2mil today.

Yeah. I think the only way to mitigate that risk for the player would be to offer 3-4 million in NIL and no school can do that.
The only way I see Jordan coming back would be if he got a really low ball offer of say maybe a million dollars. I certainly do not expect that to happen.

You are making the entire decision about money. There are other factors that might be in play. I?m not saying you are wrong, but other posters aren?t stupid by weighing additional factors. But I do think Dakota is gone.

He?s getting drafted off the raw talent, which he will still have next year. So to say there?s no guarantee next year isn?t exactly accurate - with his talent, there?s a floor, plus he would still have leverage as a junior.
Most players have maxed out their talent and are lucky to be drafted that high. But DJ obviously hasnt yet - his ceiling is much higher. Moot point anyway, so best of luck to him.

But what if he comes back and blows his knee out in the fall. He's not going to be that same 1st-2nd rd talent. You always take the money today.

He may still have trouble with the curve.

Or got into a bad car wreck, or got a DUI or a false rape allegation, or has an undiagnosed health condition, etc., etc., etc. If life changing money, always take it up front.

I never doubted Hines should come back. Unfortunately he will not have any leverage if he does. But.... if he has a great year and cuts K's in half, then he could at least parlay it into an earlier pick. Obviously if someone takes an 8th to 10th round flyer on his potential to hit 30 HRs per year even batting .250, he needs to go. Gotro ain't fixing the problems.
Mershon will have the same situation next year as he does now. He is only 5'7" but he ain't no Altuve'. So 13 to 15 rounds may be the absolute best he can do.
What does Hines do to fix his issues if he comes back? Can he play the outfield because he is an average 1B? Can he hit oppo because he never has other then the rare occurrence?
Can he hit 18-20 HRs and bat .295 with 65 RBI?
Will he end up like our previous 1B who got beat out a catcher and couldn't hit his weight?
Will he end up like his Dad Richie, playing American Legion Ball until he is 40+?

He needs to use the whole field. When he does he is at his best and that's what first impressed me about him.

Hines hit 20 HR’s and batted .300 his first 2 seasons. For whatever reason he struggled his Jr year.
He is most likely gone but if he gets a shitty offer he should return to college and collect better money while playing in more style. People talk about he will have no leverage next year- but if he could get decent money in NiL this year it all even out

This is where NIL has changed things for guys in the 10-20 round range.
I'm sure there are some like Hines probably that will sign no matter what but then there are some that will go back to school.

It didn?t hurt Trey Lipscomb to play his senior year. He?s already been in the big leagues.

For those thinking high draft picks should consider coming back, I encourage you to read up on Chris Porter, Auburn Basketball player from the late 90s.

Hines will not be a high draft pick.
