Add him to the same list that Cerantola, Walling, Fristoe (to a lesser extent), Stinnett, KC Hunt, and others are on. Maybe he figures it out in the pros. Most of these other guys on the list have

Why is he in the portal? Somebody on this board kept saying he was a can't miss high draft prospect. I just don't understand this. Hell, even Parker couldn't fix him.

More than likely going pro. This is a fall back plan and also to test his market value in the portal to be able to make a wise choice in whether to sign or not when he gets drafted. Hurd at lsu is doing the same thing.

He will be drafted late like Hunt and some others- especially with the way he is pitching this summer

He's just hedging his bet by getting in the portal. I don't blame him.

Minor leagues have the time to let them develop and lose games. College teams are trying to win now. It?s a different mindset, They don?t care about wins and losses, only player development.
You got the arm talent, they got the patience to get you there. A college coach would be out if a job in short order for leaving a guy in to figure things out.

This. You have 3-5 years to develop in the minors then alot of the ones who get released will get one or two more as FAs

And we were more than fair to Holcombe. He had his adjustment year under Foxy and then a year for him to step up under Parker. He was looking like he may be coming around and then just fell apart in the Spring.
Best of luck to him
