Texags is saying this is a HR hire and who the players wanted.
Could work out I guess.
Could also be a arnett type disaster.

I am not a Lemonis fan, but I think this lets the college baseball world know that it pulling a top line candidate is not easy. AM has almost unlimited financial resources and decided on an assistant when the big names fell. When Lemonis gets the ax, we need a realistic list of candidates that we will pursue. Sure, go after a few targeted big fish but have plan B ready and vetted.

Us and OM both likely will be in the market for a new coach

This whole deal should put to rest for good the idea that we will have no issues in attracting a top-flight head coach should we part ways with Lemonis. It just does not work that way and in general never really has for the most part in recent college baseball history. Sure there are really good baseball coaches out there to draw from but not the top guys. It is not happening.

College Station has about the same destination draw as does Starkville. These guys are already making more money than they ever dreamed so that's not enough of an incentive on its own.

Two quality SEC programs have made hires. An old retread and an assistant coach. The new team- a blue blood- was able to hire a quality HC because of his friendship with the AD.

This dude probably recruits like Vitello.

So would Selmon make a run at Skip Johnson? Or play the long game and not mess with his ultimate destination.

The top tier guys weren't top tier guys until they got to a big program. All about identifying who can be a top tier guy in the right situation.

Wait! So A&M never considered Lemonis, a sitting head coach with a NC Ring, and took a hitting coach to be their head guy?
Doesn't say much for Lemonis to not even be on the list for a program like A&M.
When Lemonis gets fired, next year, I'm not worried about who we can get. Certainly there are several HS or Juco coaches as good as him.

This appears to be as much as anything an effort to not completely lose their team in the portal.
Short term it will work.
Long term? We'll see.
It will thwart what Texas tried to do by raiding their team which will make it a little more difficult for them to win right away.

Yep. That and they need to save money. Their new AD cut a bunch of jobs Day 1

A&M could've hired a couple sitting HCs and chose not to. They settled on a coach to try to keep players.

Aggies also pulled the Washington HC to be an assistant coach.
They had really good choices as HC, but as the poster above said, they hired the assistant to get the players back from the portal. Timing of the coaching change seems more the issue than anything.

I think the definition of a top tier coach has changed drastically in the last few year. The portal and NIL has changed everything. You have to go find a coach who embraces and thrives in the current college baseball landscape, and it's probably going to be a millenial.

Yea if we move away from Lemonis, this needs to be a name on the list. Played and coached under Schloss, moved to Arky under DVH and with Vitello, and has been with Vitello since. IF we go the asst route, this is probably the hire. I used to say Nate Thompson, but his name has lost luster.

Hiring an assistant could be really good or really bad. Just never know. TAMU will always attract talent regardless of who the coach is.

Our pitching coach would likely be on the short list as well he should be. He definitely improved our pitching corps.

A&M could've hired a sitting coach, they chose not to. They went the Arnett way to keep players and not drop big money with their baseball project still up in the air a bit. Schools just aren't going all in on these secondary sports that don't drive revenue. Revenue looks pretty unstable right now with everything coming down the pipe.

They saved their players from leaving and look to already have two kids from Washington coming in to help. They will be a force again next year.

They'll drop off some. But they may have cost Texas a NC in the process.
