View Full Version : Former LSU coach headed to South Carolina baseball

South Carolina Mods said early on that they knew if Tanner called Lemonis, he would be interested to return to SC.
Lemonis was passed over by choices of other HC's who said no, and the current assistant(fired at Clemson), and was never called home.

Tanner as AD is looking like a Cohen AD.

Shocking to say the least, but Tanner has made multiple puzzling hires in recent years, especially in baseball. I feel that if Beamer flops this football season, their board of trustees will move to fire him.

Terrible hire

This would have been an incredible hire......in like 2004. I always find it funny that Manieri is still pissed that we didn't even give him an opportunity to interview when we brought Polk back.

Weird hire especially at his age but not like the guy cannot coach. He has the best coaching resume in the country.

Midget man resurfaces. He’s got to be the most winey coach ever. Bad hire.

So, a sitting P5 coach with ties to the State and a natty on his resume' wasn't given serious consideration? How dare you even suggest such a thing. You'll be lambasted by the Lemonis knob slobbers here.

This likely ends the dream of having a new coach next season. Time to rally around our guy and hope we've underestimated him.

Host, Omaha, or fired as far as next year is concerned. Hopefully he gets it done.

Lemon told them to **** off. Nobody serious is taking a job that fired a guy making a regional on the reg. They hired exactly what’s to be expected when you fire a coach that’s doing a good job.

No he does not. He won 1 Natty in 15 years at LSU. That’s not a great resume. He had to be their 6th/7th choice at best. Nobody looks at this hire and says they upgraded. Good coaches won’t take a job with unrealistic expectations

Whittle is a really good reporter on their 247 site. He was informative last year about Parker leaving for MSU and always very accurate.
He reported the day Kingston was fired, that Lemonis had interest in the job and if called he would have listen.

Maineri is assembling a really good staff. Keeping Monte Lee(big for current players and alumni), and bringing Rooney, and there is talk he may be trying to get Cain from A&M to join.
Heck of a staff.

aGAIN- you don’t fire a guy making Regionals to hire a 67 year Paul Manieri. If we made that hire people would be losing their shit. No matter your spin- SC ****ed up and trying to somehow put some spin on it

Not sure if you are drinking or something tonight, but I am not spinning. I started the thread taking a shot at Tanner for the hire.
The assistants consist of Monte Lee, Rooney(recruiter), and possibly Cain from A&M. Overall , way better than our staff other than Parker. Now that staff, you can be CEO coach or whatever it is spun as in Starkville.

You don't have to do it 100% sincerely, but he is leading our favorite baseball team next year, and we can hope he gets the job done, even if most of us suspect he won't.

Man, I don't give a damn but this sucks for the Chicken fans

I would snagged the UTK hitting coach.

I mean, if you don't give a damn about who is coach and hire Manure. Then I would go for the lottery ticket.

I was actually concerned it was going to be McD or the Oregon State kid.

The talk is they are pulling LSU’s PC which was questioned a lot this season

Hiring a 67 year old Manieri is a fail no matter how you spin it. Kendall said “big fish”. They hired a damn minnow. What a huge fail by SC. Mizzou wouldn’t have even made that hire.

So you are posting as fact tonight that Lemonis turned down SC.....but now saying it is based on common sense, and not any inside knowledge?

Sometimes you post about how hard it is if we were to try and get a coach to leave other SEC towns and come to Starkville, but if a coach is leaving you say the coach would have zero interest in a larger city in a larger recruiting base?

Lemonis was not on their list to even have the opportunity to say no.

If they hired Manieri over Lemon- it’s an even worse decision. This is a bad hire no matter how u spin it. Nobody- I mean nobody- wanted Manieri as their lead candidate when they fired their HC. His name wasn’t even mentioned. So why wasn’t their guy spouting off about Manieri when they fired their HC?

Why would Lemon leave an SEC job making 1.4 million for another SEC job to make 1.4 million?

No kidding!!

We would and should lose or minds if we hired him. Don?t think he?s bad but it?s been awhile and the only thing that makes sense is he?s there to help groom and refine a coach in waiting.

Has won a national championship and been runner up. Been to 7 CWS, won 8 conference championships and 11 conference tournament championships and did it at 2 different schools. Please name one other coach in the country who has a resume close to that. I think it is a weird hire and I would not want him here but it is not a terrible hire. Has won SEC coach of the year twice and national coach of the year twice as well.

He was hired to be their Henderson since they struck out on whoever else if I had to guess. If they knew Kingston was not the guy there is no point in holding on to him. Manieri will right the ship for his buddy Tanner until they get their guy.

LSU was not good when he took over.

Yes it is weird. Because he is already 70 you have to wonder how long he would actually be there. This is the kind of a hire a school like Arkansas State should make to generate interest in the program. But a SEC school? Really bizarre. He might retire before his first class is there for four years. I just don't see how you recruit with that if you are South Carolina.

I don't want to get my hopes up here but IF South Carolina hires Cain I would think that there is a chance that Schlossnagle would go after Gautreau for Cain's spot. Schlossnagle was very close to Jake and Cann and if we remember one of the caveats at the time of hiring Schlossnagle was that we would get to keep Gautreau.

Also, Jake is originally from Houston. And not Houston Hilltoppers Mississippi. Houston Astros Texas.

That is why I mentioned Cain last night, but another poster tried to override my post that I was spinning it.
It does sound like perhaps Cain might go to SC, maybe, because they will not say the name of that assistant hire.

He took over in 2007. LSU won the West in 2005. Smoke took them to the CWS in 2003 and 2004. Smoke had 1 bad year- 2006. And they were still 35-24 that year
