And going to the worst place in Columbus. Or at least it was 40 years ago. : Victory Drive.

Look for Biloxi to be next. Southern League attendance past 2 years showed Mississippi Braves next to last and Biloxi Shuckers last. The only positive is Biloxi has the Casino tax base to maybe ride it out another couple of years. I don't know what their lease agreement was but I bet it was shorter than the 20 year lease the Braves got for Trustmark Park. Jason Voyles and Bloomfield need to stick with building shopping centers and Waterfront Condos. Athletics Developments end up derelict when they are the Developer choice. They are also behind the ridiculous prices of the College Series tickets at Trustmark Park, trying to make up all their future minor league income on 3 College Games.

The Brewers aren't moving the Shuckers yet. The brewers have a A team next to Mil where their players rehab and the Shuckers are not owned by the Brewers. The problem with Biloxi is that the population is one of the smallest in AA and very spread out but they do develop their players better than most clubs and the attendance is on the rise now that they can market in New Orleans and Mobile. BTW The State series is always sold out.

I'm assuming that attendance is probably less important than luxury suites and sponsorships? That may make it even harder for Biloxi to keep their team, not sure; but they do at least have the Beau right there that presumably has an interest in them staying.

Columbus isn't much larger. The Columbus metro, which goes into Alabama, is just over 325,000. But it's close to Atlanta.

Gulport-Biloxi has something Columbus doesn't have and that's thousands of tourists in town every single night.

20 years is a long time for an AA baseball team to stay in one place.

Thats the main reason they are in Columbus. Every team is now less than 2 hrs from Cobb County and Columbus is putting up around 50 mil in development cost along the River. I thought they may try to go into SC around Anderson but guess not.

Yep. Which I don't get from a marketing standpoint. Especially with a new MLB soon to come to Nashville probably in the next five years. The M-Braves are actually moving to a worse stadium and probably a worse market.

AA markets in the south are all the same. Really no difference between Jackson, Mobile, Biloxi, Shreveport, Jackson TN, Huntsville, etc in terms of pure baseball market. The main exceptions are Birmingham which I think will move to AAA soon and Chattanooga because both teams have massively long histories and Birmingham gained fame from Michael Jordan playing there. MiLB will put a team in whatever town and they'll build a shiny new stadium, sell merchandise and the team will do well and then after about 10-15 years or so they'll slowly kill it and then move the team to another town. And then rinse and repeat.

Which is why Jackson will probably have another team in a few years. Along with MLB expansion coming up and teams like the A's moving it causes things to change. Las Vegas and Nashville will lose their AAA teams because of it... which causes a ripple effect. Plus you have two new teams on the horizon which will need minor league teams as well.

I don't understand the complaint about the ticket prices. What would someone pay to watch Mississippi State play Ole Miss in baseball at Dudy Noble Field this year and not have standing room only? Probably more than they would pay for the Governor's Cup. It's simply supply and demand. Two team that won a NC the past three years that are huge rivals? Or even MSU/Ole Miss vs USM which is a recent former NC against a really good SR team.

I know I certainly pay more to watch a MLB team than I did for the Governor's Cup and I was sitting behind home plate at the Governor's Cup.

They are building a new stadium trying to do what Montgomery did with their stadium.

Am I missing the benefit of having your minor league teams close to the MLB team? I get that for rehab stints it's convenient for the players, but is that really a big deal? I would have thought you'd want your Minor league teams spread out regionally to try to generate some loyalty in areas that don't have a MLB team. So it seems like Jackson, Mobile, Birmingham, Pensacola, Charleston, etc. would be as or more desirable.

The Braves do it. The Yankees Astros Rangers and A's have their teams close. The Cubs, reds Brewers have their farms really spread out and they do have a wide fan base. We love it when the reds and Cubs come to Biloxi as they bring alot of fans with them.

Probably related to player development. They can bring them easily to the MLB facility for training, rehab, and such. And easy drive to go watch them play.

But yes, there's probably some short-sightedness in not developing their fanbase.

Biloxi is paying $1.2M a year repaying the stadium cost, for 11 more years on a 20 year repayment. That provavlg means it is a 20 year lease for the team. They pay $450k a year to the city. So it operates at a loss, but it has also spurred downtown development and drives sales tax revenue. I would bet that once the stadium is paid they can cut down that lease payment from the team. Plus, there's no telling what payments he gets from the Beau.

I don't see them leaving. More auxiliary income than anyone else can offer. The Beau can buy discount tax and comp them/pair them and drive a ton of profit for themselves.

You Yankees from north of I10 may not realize that most attendees literally park in the Beau parking garage and walk through the casino to get to and from the games.

The Beau doesn't have anything to do with the BB team or stadium. They hate it when fans park over there as they see those spots for the employees and gamblers. The team is now owned by a sports store guy and he us trying to improve attendance which he did last year. The Brewers are happy with the team in Biloxi and their major concern is player development. As for rehabbing most of it is done in FL and Arizona now. When you see a player on the devolpment list this means they are in those 3 areas rehabbing for more than a month or so. It keeps them off the IL. But I will say this abd always have Minor league baseball is the best bang for your entertainment buck. The players are very approachable esp to kids and will take pics with them and sign anything for them. It's great for them and cheap for you.

The Beau literally leased them the land for $1 and spurred the build of a pedestrian overpass over HWY 90 linking the stadium to the Beau.

They leased the land to the City not the franchise and they got the naming rights which I believe are up for sale. The only casino which has a bloc of season tickets is the Golden Nuggett and it's for anyone who wants to go to the games. The overpass was in the plans because the employees had to cross 90 and were getting hit. I asked a former team ticket manager what the Beau had done for the team and he said nothing. The stadium has spruned a ton of growth across the street and in the general vicinity of the stadium. If you go to the games I sit next to the 3rd base tunnel om Row A. Best seat in the house. And I loved it when Chris Maloney managed the team/ He let me shoot the breeze with some players in the tunnel before the game. Just to gig MSState 7 Acuna would sign anything you gave him.

That probably explains why they didn't connect it much closer to the casino floor. Bit of a PITA to park at the Beau to be honest.

I try to hit up a Braves game there once a year, usually get free tix for something or other. I saw Acuna and Dansby there, Money Mike I think....and whoever was on the team this past year.

Not many in the team this past year. 2022 had Harris. His dad was pretty cool came to all the games/ The manager this past year was pretty cool Laid back Hawaiian. Jesse Franklin is a big prospect.

Having great young prospects like that come through Jackson was always one of the coolest things about minor league baseball.

As far as game quality minor league baseball is pretty crappy. I think college baseball has a better on the field product. Yes, college players aren't as polished and some aren't as skilled but there are a lot more fun things as far as pure baseball goes. Pre-season tournaments, games that matter and have intensity, postseason tournaments. Even games like the Governor's Cup.

Upper minors are good bc you can have a player called up to the big team in less than an hour. Is this that important with 81 road games? Who knows?

Speaking of Acuna, I saw his AA debut in Pearl. He absolutely destroyed every ball that night. Sucks knowing that may have been the last chance I got to see an all time great when he's still young. I'll catch some games this year, but the braves' minors suck right now

Yep. They got a good prospect in Campbell and the catcher if they can stay healthy. Acunas 1st game in Biloxi he goes 4-4 with 2 hmrs. While talking to him and Gohra he didn't think he was that good. So had had hin sign a baseball and took a pic of him in the on deck cir which he signed the next day. Thanks Chris.

Awesome.

Thats why I really push for people to attend Minor league games. I started going to see the Mets in Jackson then the baby Braves in Greenville and now the Shuckers in Biloxi. It's the best time for any dad/son and a whole lot cheaper than going to Cobb Cty.
