Top Baseball Recruit Flips to USCe

2024 grad PJ Morlando just flipped to South Carolina after being committed to State for several years. He's an extremely high draft prospect that'll most likely never play college ball, but it still stings a little.

I've said this for 2 months. What top player wants to play for a school that can't make Hoover and has a coach on the hot seat who will be fired before you get to campus?

"We've got to keep Lemonis or we'll loose this highly rated class!" May be true for the '24 season. But we're just hurting the '25, '26, and '27 classes.

The guy right now is rated the #3 HS junior in the country. He's not going to college

Then why flip at all? No need to. He could stay committed to State and then sign a pro contract. Does he feel being committed to USCe gives him more clout to being drafted higher as their commit rather than ours?

It makes no since unless there is an underlying reason. Guilt by association maybe?

Did Lebron FLIP from OSU to Northwestern before going pro?

Would it make a difference if this guy flipped to LSU because they promised him $1 mil in NIL? You know exactly why he flipped just like I do and him not going to college anyway sounds exactly like (we didn?t want him anyway) football flips. He may not go to South Carolina but one thing is for sure, he damn sure ain?t coming to State.

He is from SC, so maybe he grew up an SC fan. If he had committed to lsu, then I would be a little more concerned about the optics. Optics are about all that are involved with this kid though.

That said, Lemonis needs to get the train back on the tracks ricky tick.

Would be more like flipping from Ohio State to Indiana. SC has more Nattys than us

Right, his "plan B" used to be State, now its SC. That's what we're saying. Not that he's likely to need his plan B, just that it's no longer us, and that That's a bad thing

Wait a minute, os the guy going pro or is he flipping for NIL reasons? NOBODY throws NIL at a kid that won't be on campus. Not in any sport. You can't simultaneously say we shouldn't care about him because he's going pro AND say SC is so convinced he'll make it to campus they offer NIL.

Now, they may promise NIL to a kid IF he makes it to campus, but then all were saying is State is getting outspent AGAIN in baseball. You're trying to shift the narrative from "Lemonis lost a recruit" to "State can't hang in recruiting due to NIL". Not sure how that helps. If anything, it makes the situation WORSE: We can replace a coach that's doing bad, we can't replace poor boosters.

Yes- the NIL promise is if he makes it to campus. Which is extremely unlikely at this point

And we didn't match said offer, thus a potential future 1st round stud wont play college here. Just sayin', if we want to be the best we've got to get the best players, we can't be letting every top Portal or HS kid be bought out from under us

We have seen MLB prospects flip schools before.

Henderson had a UK recruit from Florida that flipped to MSU as a HS-Senior. Bryson Hutchinson.

Was drafted in the 12th round by the Mets.

Then signed with the Mets after a few weeks of negotiation. The college commitment was probably just leverage.

Chipper Jones flipped from Stetson (local school) to Miami, he did not want more schooling and did not even like going to HS. He was being recruited, he felt like giving a "commitment" was just something one did. It's in his book, a great baseball book. Covers how baseball brawls happen, how most minor leaguers spend 1/2 their bonus on a new truck, how women-folk get the other 1/2 of the bonus, how major prospects are managed in the minors, Macon Georgia baseball groupies, how Latin guys 'dance' with your girls at parties, the etiquette demands of Albert Pujols, how Pedro Borbon was a brazen womanizer of teammates GF and/or Wife, and how cool Derek Jeter actually is.

Why write down a million dollars beside a kid that will never play college baseball? Whatever the number the kid is looking for is not tied up and State can use that money on other prospects that are actually going to play college baseball.
