    Phi Beta Kappa

Today, Mississippi State University earned and was granted the right to shelter a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Big win for academics at the University. We were the only SEC school that did not have a chapter.

When I transferred from NEMCC to State for the Spring, 1974, semester I was Phi Beta Kappa. GPA slid a little after "classes" at Len Lew's, The Triangle Club, The Southern Aire, Welding Works. Recovered that Senior Year to get that degree, Class of '77. Hail State!

Way longer than that Jack, I was a freshman in 1973 and I remember back in those days we were campaigning for Phi Beta Kappa. I had a fraternity brother that made ODK, that was the highest at the time. Tremendous honor, Hail State!

    This is great news.

Why has this not happened until now? Seriously.

Can somebody explain how this is different and why it is such a bigger deal than all the other random academic honor societies? Not trying to mock the accomplishment, just generally curious. Thanks.

Maybe because we're primarily engineering (or I think of us that way - there are some majors that have a lot more students) and it's only awarded in the College of Arts & Sciences? Last I heard, Georgia Tech didn't have a chapter and they're pretty high on the college totem pole. Don't think Cal Tech does either.

Might be perception. Or maybe higher standards to be admitted. It's the only scholastic honorary society that most people can name.

It is the oldest (1776 at William&Mary)n only 10% of universities have it because of rigorous standards, only about 1% of students are asked to join and besides grade requirements they look at student background and character so if u make it in it is a signal (to future employers and grad programs) that you are the cream. We will get more looks from top students because we have this chapter to offer them.
