Gonna be very interesting to see how this all shakes out. Almost every year it works itself out. This year the water is starting off much muddier than it usually does at this point.
You can make the argument though that we already have an 10 team playoff - add in the SEC, P12, B1G, ACC, and Big12 Championships. Those games should narrow the field, but we have 1 too many conferences. What they should do is recognize the Conference Championship games as winner take all (maintains the relevance of conference play) and add a play-in game with the lowest rated P5 conference champion and the highest rated G5 champ. Play it the 2nd weekend in December at the G5 school, then the winner gets the playoff spot.

This year, the Pac12 Champ would go to UCF to play for the 4th seed.
