Each SEC school's last HC hire
Got interested after hearing all the "sitting" head coach vs Coordinator banter, and I wanted to see when each SEC school last pulled a sitting P5 or NFL HC. Also, where each school's last HC hire came from.

No doubt. Thought about putting that on there. Nutt was about to be ran off from Arkansas. It's not like Ole Miss "pulled" him. The shine was way off of Jimbo at FSU. Stupid Aggies waaaay overpaid on that one. Curry had all his hiring and firing of assistants power stripped and didn't get a raise after winning the SEC(but losing to Auburn for the third straight year) , so he "left" for Kentucky.

Look at A&M floundering in their search. Richest school in the country and they can't get who they want. Too many are blinded be their own ideas. Reality and perception are two different things completely. We made a great hire based on the situation. A&M is infighting their way to who knows what. When Stoops shoots you down, lol.

Back to our coaching hires I remember:
1. Emory Bellard(1979-1985)-Texas guy, Texas OC under Royal and creator of the wishbone. A&M HC from 1972-78. We didn't pull him because he resigned halfway through the 78 season. Perceived as a great hire when it went down.
2. Rockey Felker(1986-90)-was Bama WR/DB coach from 83-85. Was the school hero coming home. Only 32 years old. Wasn't ready at all. Rumors are we could've possibly hired Spurrier. Typical State hire.
3. Jackie Sherrill(1991-2003)-had been the HC at Washington St(1977), Pitt(1978-81), and A&M(1982-88). Proven winner but very controversial and risky hire. He was a proven winner, but because of NCAA troubles at both Pitt and A&M many deemed him unhireable much like Brlies but for totally different reasoning. We took a chance. Outside the box thinking. This made me feel that we were serious about winning football. State flipped everyone the bird and said we are hiring a winner. Scared the hell out of Ole Miss fans. I loved it.
4. Sylvester Croom(2004-08)- we all know why he was hired. Wasn't qualified for the job, and it showed.
5. Dan Mullen(2009-17)- young brash successful National Championship winning OC. Hiring a coordinator is always risky, but brought a modern spread offense which had never been ran here. Most successful modern era coach at State.
6. Joe Moorhead(2018-19)-hired another flavor of the month OC from a successful P5 power. One worked this one didn't.
7. Mike Leach(2020-2022)-first sitting P5 HC we ever pulled. Had it going in the right direction before his untimely death.
8. Zach Arnett(2023)- hired on staff DC because of many unforeseen events. Death of current HC, no AD in place, among other things. Horrible lazy hire. Whole thing exploded in our faces like many thought.
All this said, hiring the "right" HC is a crapshoot. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice. We'll see what happens with this hire.
