Something to watch this weekend in college football

The clock no longer stops on 1st downs. That is going to shorten them a little. Its also going to affect your 2 minute offense as you no longer get that stoppage to get a new play in without time running as well as subbing real fast.

Coaches will have to manage the clock a little differently at the end of half and games

I thought the clock stops in the last 2 minutes of each half.

I don't think I like those changes. Can anybody explain why this is a good move?

I believe the last 2 minutes of a half the clock stops on first downs.

New rule changes for the 2023 college football season aim to reduce game time. Clock will continue to run after a first down is gained, except during the last two minutes of either half. Other rule changes include prohibitions on consecutive team timeouts and penalties carrying over to the next quarter.

So you can shorten the game without cutting advertisements.

LOL, it is all about the money! I should have known. smh

So now fans pay even more per hour of entertainment! That is kind of like reducing the size of a package of your favorite snack from 8 ounces to 6 and yet you are charged the same price!

We may see more upsets. How many times have you seen the favored team pull out the W in the last few seconds to prevent an upset?

I think we will have 6-8 fewer plays a game, based on absolutely noting but my own estimation.

If they want to reduce game time stop showing those damn Dr. Pepper commercials.

No commercials til halftime. That should be the rule.

This is good for teams like us. We don’t have as much depth as the big time recruiters. Could be the difference in an upset happening for us or not.

It's going to make offenses that generate explosive plays a premium if you want to see a lot of scoring.

Army and Air Force are going to have the ball entire quarters now.

the stats from Week 0 showed about 7 fewer plays per game but game time was not reduced thanks to commercials. And that's with the Notre Dame/Navy game that ran under 3 hours.

I was listening to some of the Monday pressers from coaches on talk radio this afternoon and I think it was Kiffin that said it reduced possessions by 1.7 in the game, which is not insignificant. I don't know how accurate the stats were that he was quoting and he was just talking about the 7 or so games from Saturday.

The clock should run unless it is an incomplete pass or someone goes out of bounds.

I've watched pro games a lot more the last several years and it seems like in the second half of games, commercial times are much more limited. They just seem to fly by faster in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The college game needs to do the same as well as cut the total length of the timeout.

I will say for college games it seems like the breaks are longer when you are sitting in the stadium. There is nothing more annoying than seeing that guy in the red cap run out on the field and stand there for what seems like 10 minutes.

My guess is the total game time will not change. One they have to get commercials in and two there will be more heat TOs. Time management will be affected but not game time.

I wish something could be done to stop the faked injuries at end of halves to stop the clock. Players flopping like its soccer.

Four hour games is tooo long - I hope to see them at 3-1/2 hours but may be wishful thinking.

I really don't mind long football games.

The media may worry about their deadlines but most of them are wusses anyway.
