Then signed with the Mets after a few weeks of negotiation. The college commitment was probably just leverage.
Chipper Jones flipped from Stetson (local school) to Miami, he did not want more schooling and did not even like going to HS. He was being recruited, he felt like giving a "commitment" was just something one did. It's in his book, a great baseball book. Covers how baseball brawls happen, how most minor leaguers spend 1/2 their bonus on a new truck, how women-folk get the other 1/2 of the bonus, how major prospects are managed in the minors, Macon Georgia baseball groupies, how Latin guys 'dance' with your girls at parties, the etiquette demands of Albert Pujols, how Pedro Borbon was a brazen womanizer of teammates GF and/or Wife, and how cool Derek Jeter actually is.
Right, but he already committed to us. Every aspect you mention was taken care of. So why bother flipping to SC?

Why recruit a kid that will never play college baseball in the first place? We did. And so did SC. Because even if there's a 99% chance they will go pro that 1% is worth the effort for 2 or 3 year difference makers.
And I highly doubt $1M was written down. Proven top Portal studs don't go for that much, and SC just lost a PC and almost lost their HC due to lack of commitment to baseball. They aren't dropping anything close to $1m on a baseball player if they can't pay their HC enough to keep him

Oh well, so much for Lemonis' one strong suit being recruiting.

I guess the premise is that other kids see your school as a destination, when they see the biggest names committing there. The coach has a brand ambassador for a few years. Alex Rodriguez was #1 Overall Pick that committed to U of Miami, never played for Miami but he still identifies with the school and even donates - 3.9M to the renovation of the Baseball facilities.
Another reason can be that you recruit kids as HS Freshman and Sophomores. Some kids keep on growing into 1st Round levels. I think that's what happened with Austin Riley. He wanted to be a Bulldog but his stock kept rising.
Another premise is family ties. Evidently the Sam Cozart genes are perfect for baseball that might be too good for college. But maybe now you have a link to the great family and the dad/uncle is a respected coach. Flip side is Ole Miss with the Dulin kid, that turned sour?

An out of state kid who will never play college ball flipped to his in state school. Who cares. Much more interested in the Holman, Montgomery, burns sweepstakes.

Plus, if Twitter is accurate, Makai Grant made it to campus. That's possibly a big win.

I assume that part of his sales pitch was "winning" and "regionals". Can't do that as of late. Lolz

You must have missed the post saying Lemonis had put little effort into recruiting the kid. Go back and check it out.

The draft is much shorter now too. Both should help to keep players.
