Per OM Spirit- He's interested in the job.
Could he do good in Oxford?

He's a hell of a coach. That'd be a grand slam hire for them so yea bad for us but Howland has a leg up on him with the momentum rolling here now.

They could definitely do worse than Thad Matta. I heard he had some health concerns, though.

They can have him...they should be able to pull a real quality candidate not a re-tread

Like our re-tread? Matta has won 74% of his games, never had a losing season, and made the NCAA tourney 14 of the 16 years his team was eligible. If there is any gas in the tank, this would be a massive upgrade over AK

If Thad Matta isn't a quality cantidate, who is? He's been to multiple final fours, and won the BIG10 championship like 9 of 14 years at OSU.

So we would get to see if recruiting to Oxford, MS is the same as recruiting to Columbus, Ohio. Hee, hee, hee.....think I already know the answer!

I don't know how he'd do here (recruiting), but I'll take Howland recruiting over anyone they'll get.

It must be interesting hating something so much it makes your brain malfunction. Would be an outstanding hire.

He's a definite upgrade over AK but he won less games every year his last 4yrs at Ohio St.

    '13-14 25-10 (lost 1st rd NCAA) 5th in Big 10
    '14-15 24-11 (lost 2nd rd NCAA) 6th in Big 10
    '15-16 21-14 (lost 2nd rd NIT) 7th in Big 10
    '16-17 17-15 (no postseason) 10th in Big 10

Ben missed the tourney 2 of his last 4 years at UCLA. A recharge was good for Ben, and I would rather not find out if a recharge was good for Thad. OM can do much, much worse than matta

It doesn't quite make sense to me why he's interested in the job. Basketball recruiting has always seemed like an uphill battle there, and you'd have to think a guy with his resume would have more attractive options.

Oh I agree but Howland also won the PAC 12 his last year at UCLA. The 1st rd upset cost him his job. I wasn't knocking Matta at all he just doesn't put fear in me at OM. Not unless OM does a fundamental change in their care for basketball behind the scenes. It would be a big hire for them from a perception standpoint & being taken more serious.

Until all of this stuff is sorted out with the FBI and NCAA, I think anyone taking a job right now would be foolish. There may be some really attractive jobs coming open before too much longer.

I don't know if he puts fear into me, but I can't think of a better hire they could realistically get. I wouldn't have thought they could get him either. Of course I also would have thought Howland would have better options than State and our basketball job is significantly better than theirs, so maybe I underestimate how reluctant higher level teams are to hire "retreads".

Agreed. I seem to remember us pulling the trigger at the perfect time on RR, though...earlier enough that the other schools, like Tennessee, weren't on the market yet. I could be wrong, but I definitely recall something about our timing be pretty good that led to us hiring Ben.
