Don’t remember every name but there was some random Michigan State blog that had us hiring Chris Peterson from Boise State that got me excited for a few minutes.
-
If I remember correctly male cheerleader flew to Boise to get Chris Peterson
-
The infamous rumored Gene call to Peterson's secretary to ask if he is a Scientologist. But Peterson was the hot rumor that he had agreed to be our coach. Then it was between Mullen and Kevin Wilson

Byrne interviewed other candidates for the job. Chris Peterson of Boise State and Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley both denied interest in the job and Byrne also appears to have talked with Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. -ESPN

I remember wanting Wilson at the time. Glad that didn't materialize.

Know for a fact Malzahan interviewed and he wanted it. He was our #2. He wanted to go head to head with Nutt, who he despised. Tommy Bowden wanted it but I don?t think we interviewed him at all.
-
Wilson turned us down because he thought he could not win in Starkville. Then He went and got his ass fired at Indiana.

Mullen, Hatcher, Hud, Wilson were the final 4.
Dooley was never offered or interviewed. Peterson was a pipe dream.
At the time Hatcher and Mullen were my top 2
Not only did Mississippi State embarrass LSU on this night. Davis Wade Stadium wrecked Tiger Stadium in music choice, atmosphere and, most of all, volume.
When I'm 80 and deaf, it's not going to be all those Springsteen concerts or Queen at Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans on Halloween Night in 1978, it will be this game...............Glen Guilbeau--Sherveport Times

Gary Patterson was mentioned a bunch. Don't know if he was ever offered.
Seems I remember he pulled his name out of the hat early.

Could be wrong but thought Byrne interviewed Hud and liked him then interviewed Mullen and asked Mullen to take Hud. That's how he ended up on our staff.

...Byrne and his family were close friends of Peterson. Byrne called Peterson and had a oral agreement for him to be our coach, it was a violation of NCAA rules to contact Peterson without the permission of Boise State. True, Peterson has a son needing specialized cars. However, that was not the reason we didn?t get him. It was the rules violations. We were set to helicopter or fly his son and family for visits, etc., so after Peterson was ruled out, we turned to Mullen.
