Some Thoughts
- Tonight was Murphy's law. If it could go wrong it did. They needed about 15 things to go right & hit jackpot. Yet only won by 3 points with 5 turnovers & a broken leg.
- This team has played poorly in 3 of it's last 4 games. Vs UMass, UPig, & OM we were not a good football team. Why we played so poorly down the stretch & got loose with the football is a problem that needs be addressed.
- If your looking for a sliver lining from tonight (Gotta really try because it sucks) it's that we may have increased our odds of winning big in 2018 by Keytaon Thompson getting the experience he did tonight + the bowl game. With the way Mullen uses his QBs, they are going to occasionally get hurt. Just the way it is. However, Keytaon is going to be a baller & tonight only increased the odds that he'll be effective in 2018 when we need him to win a game for us. He has really quick feet & throws a softer, more catchable ball than Fitz. Yes, he is loose with the football, but I think the majority of the his fumbling problems will be solved by simply gaining weight. He is a little lean right now takes punishment when hit. With the addition of 15, he be delivering the blow & not fumble as much. Mullen was extremely conservative with Key (Which is always Mullen's nature) early in the game & Key played tight. Once we let Key just play, throw, run & just make plays, he was fine. It took our coaches about 1.5 quarter tonight to figure out what Key could & couldn't do. Unfortunately, it took too long. Had Fitz gotten hurt against Ark & the coaches had the chance to game plan for Key, tonight likely turns out different. Instead, they had to throw the entire game plan in the trash with 9 min left in the 1st quarter. Just a horrible circumstance for anyone.
- Mullen has got to step it up in Egg Bowls. OM is simply playing this game with more passion than us. 2014 = horrible effort in Oxford, 2015 Dak's SR year = horrible effort at home with the Sugar bowl on the line, 2016 = We knocked them around when they had to play their FR QB like we did tonight, 2017 = Horrible again. Now, I completely understand that with Fitz we likely win the this game by multiple scores, but the big plays that we gave up & Fitz's INT on the first drive were just pathetic. This team is not handling the Egg Bowl rivalry as seriously as OM & it is showing on the field. Their players are playing dirtier, looser, & with more passion currently in this rivalry & IMO that is unacceptable.
- We must be devastatingly slow at CB. Again, every top level WR we've faced this year, with the exception of Kirk & he dropped some TDs vs us, the WR had a career day. OM even threw some incompletions tonight on deep balls that were open.
- Kylin Hill is a dude.
- This team desperately needs a big play guy. What AJ Brown & Calvin Ridley do for their teams is unquantifiable. We lack the ability to score from anywhere on the field & that hurts us in big games.
- Just a terrible night. I'm devastated. We lost to our rival, everything went wrong, & now South Carolina & LSU will pass us in the bowl pecking order & relegate us to somewhere shitty. Just a terrible night all the way around & tough one to accept, but it does not define us. Fitz will be fine, OM is still going to hammered by the NCAA, & we still return an awesome team in 2018. This team has to improve though. They have to value the football more. The lackadaisical turnovers we saw late in the year must be cleaned up & we MUST get faster at CB or we'll continue to get burned by 5* WRs.

Earlier in the week, we laughed about Mullen saying "we've elevated our program" when asked why he doesn't mention TSUN and all that. I generally agree, but we have to get out of this situation where it definitely seems like Ole Miss is way more into the Egg Bowl than we are.
-
I agree, but I don't want to see us become dirtier. I want to see us play with more intensity and knock their ****ing teeth out with punishing hits. I agree that they played with nothing to lose tonight because they didn't. However, we definitely would have won if Fitz doesn't go down.
-
Alabama is the reason we played like shit in 3 out of the last 4. Looking ahead to them vs UMass, still thinking about them vs Arky and once you lose it its hard to get back which is what happened tonight. Bama beat us twice again boys, just like in 2014.
-
You can expect to lose the Eggbowl 1 out of every 2 years. It's the way it is, and always will be.

Yeah. I was just pointing out that them being a nastier is a sign of how much more passion they are playing with in this game.
Three of the last four years, they have showed up as the aggressor.
Something isn't right when comparing how their players are showing up vs ours.
We always appear very tight & conservative in this game while they appear to just have fun & let it all out.
IMO, that matches the personalities of the coaches.
Dan Mullen is a conservative coach that loves structure. It's why I don't believe he'll go to Tennessee. I just don't think Dan is comfortable with the unknown, risk, etc.. He likes control & coaches & prepares his team in that manner. However, Freeze/OM never cared about that & only cared about winging it, calling escorts, & playing with no fear.
Dan's teams play with fear in this game while OM just plays. It clearly shows up in how the players carry themselves.

I don't think we play the Egg Bowl with "fear," so to speak. I think Ole Miss just comes way more hyped for it, which is crazy.

The last 27 years have certainly showed us that this is true. If it weren't for a random 18 game winning streak by OM over 40 years ago, the overall series has been basically even.
I just don't like the mentality differences in this game recently. We play with fear while they play loose & with nothing to lose.

Lets not all act like Mullen cant beat OM, look at his record. Tonight and 15 had a lot in common, absolute horrendous start to the game, making it too much to overcome by the end. I think yall have some points esp about everything and I mean everything going wrong, not gonna sugarcoat it majority of it is our fault. OM is not a good football team by any means and we lost to them. Any team that can put everything it has into one game is dangerous and thats what they did. State is always better as the underdog, never once have we played well as a favorite vs a team with a pulse. The better team didnt win tonight and it showed by the end but theres nothing we can do about it now
-
Meh if Fitz doesn?t go down we roll them again. Some times bad stuff happens. That injury was so gruesome it took the air out of team and crowd.

We've got to overcome this.
You simply can't build a championship program with this mentality. The only way to win championships is to learn to win as favorite.

I agree. With Fitz we win easily IMO, but it doesn't change the fact that we have been playing tight & conservative in this game while they have been the aggressor with more passion.

Its been 100 plus years with plenty of chances to change it and we aint yet. Like I said, bama did this to us again. We blew our load against them couldnt get it back. Didnt care to vs Arkansas, lose the heart and soul of your team and proceed to meltdown after it tonight
-
We had two freshman making up our backfield for quite a bit if the night, and other than a couple fumbles they looked damn good. I?m excited about our future there. Key will be a stud. I would love to see a single game in college football this year where a true frosh came in and put up 300 yards when he ran out of the tunnel expecting to wear a headset all night. Much less in the SEC w the kind of emotion you had in that game. Damn Proud of him. He gets an entire year to work and tweak his game. If you?re not excited about him in the backfield in 2019, you are a dumbass
-
I disagree about us not playing with emotion tonight. It was there until we lost our leader- Fitz. Heck we held them to only 10 points in the first half. And when Fitz was in the game we moved the ball. Yeah he threw an INT but that's pretty typical of Fitz unfortunately. He usually turns it on as the game goes on.
-
Even when they got in V formation we were diving at the ball/knees and riled up. If you think we didn?t have emotion you just don?t understand the sport and want something to blame.

Agree completely. That gruesome injury to Fitz took some steam from the team and the crowd. Unm knew who was gonna beat them and they took him out. I have a new level of hate for them.
