Hud & ULL is a perfect example

of what cheating and cutting corners will do for your program. ULL is not a program that has boosters running wild paying to get recruits. Hud got there and immediately got to work exploiting the gray area. His working around the rules got him an advantage that led to 4-straight 9 win season in '11,'12,'13, and '14. They won 15 games combined the 3 years before that run. Then bam, NCAA comes snooping around and finds some academic stuff and hits them with probation but more importantly made them play by the rules and hit them for a few schollies. That has led to a 4-8 in '15, 6-7 in '16, and they are currently 3-4 coming off a 47-3 loss at the hands of Arkansas State. This year's squad features the 126th ranked defense in the nation. There is a clear difference of ULL cheating and ULL straight up.

There was a time when this board was on fire for Hud and as a Mississippian, I always wished him well. ULL football from 2009 to today is a perfect example of what circumventing the rules to gain a competitive advantage does for you and also shows what happens when the NCAA shuts that down (at least momentarily). I also think this is a perfect guide for OM as well. They are currently seeing what happens when the recruiting machine gets slowed down and we haven't even gotten to the sanctions yet.

Well ... it wasn't the entire board that wanted him here. I sure didn't, and I remember several others who didn't also.

He very well could have been cheating to set himself up for a higher level job. It didn't work.

Isn't OM a good example as well?

When he was winning early, there must have been something in the wind since I'm unaware of his name being mentioned as a potential candidate for any other program. He obviously still has his job so maybe the shade hasn't completely covered him but there's damn sure some smoke around the premises.

Good post, Beast. I shudder to think what would?ve happened had we fired Dan in 2013. I?m sure glad cooler heads prevailed. Imagine if we had hired hud and he started an arms race with the bears for recruits? We would be in the same boat with the bears.

I don’t think you read til the end but you’re missing the bigger point. Every OM media person has said there is no pay for play (when there actually is). What they’re implying is that if there isn’t $25k smoking gun cash transactions that it’s really not cheating hence no competitive advantage on the recruiting front. By looking at ULL you’re looking at what just skirting some rules can do for you.

Sooner or later it always starts and ends with personal integrity on the part of the guy at the top. Right now for us the guy at the top is Dan Mullen and I am so damn glad that it is.

So sanctions basically made them have a peter sirmon level defense? /shudder
