Metallica lost a step after the death of Cliff Burton
I do not think the Black Album gets made, at least not with Bob Rock as producer, if Cliff did not die in Germany. Cliff was the hardcore part of Metallica.
Listen to Kill 'Em All, Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning vs. what comes after and it's obvious Cliff was a driving force in the band.
