So the editors at the CL
Are trying to play catch up now that this story has been blown wide open. Sitting on this hasn't worked out too well for them. Word on the street is Sam Hall has been reaching out to various people looking for direction, and how they would handle this moving forward. It must suck to have national media breaking the stories YOU chose to sit on.
We tried to tell you, Sambo.

They've got to used to it by now.

There's a new sheriff in town for the CL. USA Today national writers Josh Peter and Dan Wolken are breaking big stories while the CL staff hides.
Sam's probably getting some calls from McLean, VA, not Nashville. Things will finally change, I think.

Word is the Gannett people aren't happy how this has been handled.

How the hell would they be? The Clarion Ledger has systematically ignored corruption, lies, notable allegations, and possibly the biggest sports story in the history of the state of Mississippi. Gannett would have to be an idiot to continue its relationship with the local people in charge.
-
Here's how I see it. If Wolken and Peter can report on it then you don't really need Kellenberger or the others?
-
How much more can the CL downsize before it ceases to exist?

They absolutely are. Look no further than how Dan Wolken, who works for USA Today, which is Gannett's "flagship" brand, has handled the case.
What's happening is that Wolken's articles have probably been getting high readership numbers, which has caused Gannett to probably look into the situation, &, once they looked into the situation, they were probably pissed.
Dan Wolken & the CL writers work for the same company. So somebody at the middle management level decided that the CL wasn't going to cover the investigation & Gannett just realized this.
Throw that in with the fact that Rosebowls book has probably already sold somewhere near 2,000 copies, which at $24 dollars a piece = $48,000 of current revenue & you've got a big story that is only going to get bigger. Horrible decision by all involved

Also Steve is being hosted on different radio stations and keeps saying that he gave local media the info but they just sat on their hands.

Having been professionally involved with Gannett, I can confirm this is exactly what happened. Wolken's articles performed incredibly and continue to consistently lead in various digital viewership metrics. The response surprised upper brass and has lead them to ask CL "How the 17 is this going on in your market, yet you've been silent???"

This.
I think it's probably cycled back around & now gotten word into the ears of those at Gannett & they're none too happy about being scooped for over a year or two. Even if they had covered it, they wouldn't have gone to nearly the lengths of uncovering the corruption that Steve has. IT may never come if the CL had covered it.

Sam Hall is probably also asking Ole Miss if it's OK for the CL to take its head out of the sand.
And USA Today has no doubt noticed Steve Robertson getting more norariety and revenue out of this story than the CL has. I hope they chop heads at the CL to fix this situation.

Rose to CL Sports Editor.

It will take new editor, and bumping Sammon up to the sports editor for anything to change.
-
Sammon deserves it. He is the best sports guy they have. He is one of the best writers they have bar none. Jerry Mitchell is good and other than that, it's Sammon.

So, IT was coming for both OM and the CL!!! This is better than expected. OM is no longer cheating and stealing recruits and we might end up getting fair coverage out of this.
Can anyone show the higher ups at Gannett what the CL did with the baseball SEC championship headline? Let them know that many MSU fans have lost all faith in the CL and are boycotting.
Death penalty or bust!!!***

It can do like all the major papers in Alabama did ... essentially go out of business.
