No but the type of job doesn't matter. Legally you can't use arrest data when making a hiring decision. Checking criminal records will only show criminal convictions. Driving records can only go back 7 years.

Could they hire a PI to do a set of reference and character checks? yes, but unless they had reason to suspect skeletons in his closet an employer isn't going to do that. The references you provide are the ones that are checked. That's just how it works.

By the way, worked in employment background screening, that's why I know this.

It's unlikely that they would have had reason to be suspicious at the point they hired him. And a lot of the rumors that are coming out now probably wouldn't have come out then. People who knew things probably expected to not be believed, so they stayed quiet. Now that there are public stories being accepted more people will feel able to share their story.
