So State has had a 1st round pick four out of the last five drafts...

Pretty impressive since a lot of high schoolers go in the first round so not many opportunities for that many college players. It is probably more impressive than Bama having 1 every year in football.

This is a good thing- and not like Ole Miss means it of course. It means that you can come to MSU and get developed as a player and get a high signing bonus as a junior. Renfroe, Hudson, and Rooker were all raw when they came to MSU and Lindgren was a 12th round pick who improved his stock.

Why are there more picks per round than teams?

Compensation picks for free agency loses. And the competing balance picks added between first two rounds.

A few are compensation picks for losing a player that declined a qualifying offer & a few are won in a lottery among small market clubs. There is also a compensation after the 2nd round.

The MLB draft is complex and others here undoubtedly understand it far better than I do, but teams can be granted extra picks because they failed to sign players in the previous draft, or they can earn draft picks by losing certain free agents.

The example used on Wikipedia is that if last year's No. 5 pick failed to sign, that team would get the No. 6 pick in this year's draft.
