Rules mean nothing. Zero o

What happened? Jim made it sound like there was nothing controversial about the catcher, but y'all are pissed at him.

Gordon isn't a SEC quality pitcher but with our depth we don't have much choice.

I know the catcher can block the plate but didn't know he could just squat in the base path before he had the ball

I would have to ear hole that bastard ass catcher for kinda kicking at Gridley's hand when he was trying to touch the plate...
-
So at South Carolina blocking the plate is allowed. Every call has gone their way.

I'm not sure if they ever officially reversed the original call. They called him out, then they conferenced for a while, and the announcers said he was safe and the score was changed...then they reviewed it and confirmed he was out.
The catcher was blocking the plate, but I guess they said he was doing so in the act of catching the ball. Regardless of the result, it was dumb to send Gridley.

He was clearly blocking the plate, however, because the ball arrived a step before Gridley, it doesn't matter.
That is one rule I don't like. If you don't allow a runner to plow the catcher, then it should not matter whether you have the ball or not, the runner needs to have an option of being able to slide to the plate, which Gridley clearly did not.
Edit: Unless I misremember the rule. I thought they can block it when they have the ball in hand.

3b coach was waiving all the way on the replay from center.

You can't do that in college baseball.

Then he needs to be removed, whoever it is. Gridley was dead from the second he decided to go.

The rule is crap. How are you supposed to not hit a "defenseless" catcher by sliding, if they are allowed to squat in front of the plate by 2 yds?

No he doesn't. 2 outs and with the kick in left had to be a perfect throw. And it was. Not a problem sending him there.
-
You can't truck him but players these days need to understand in that situation you slide feet first and allow your metal cleats slide right up his outer thigh.
