Well said, and totally agree. Just think if a film like The Godfather was released today, how would it be received? And Blade Runner 2049 is a great example of that phenomenon in today's cinema culture: it's being overwhelmingly praised by reviewers, yet it is bombing at the box office because people don't want to be challenged to think when going to the movies.
Chris Nolan is about the only guy that somehow makes movies that are great at the box office and seem to also make you think. You can watch his movies several times and still come away with something new.

Nolan definitely has the star power other directors don't. Denis Villeneuve is one of the best directors working today. Obviously 2049 will give him some recognition; I hope he gets at least nominated for best director. It's deserved.
He was nominated for Arrival, which also was amazing. Sicario was nominated for best picture, and his films Enemy and Prisoners were ****ing great, too.
