Dan Mullen controls how the next 2 weeks go
He can continue his coachspeak replies about having a job already and such when asked
OR
He can simply say "I'll be the coach at Miss State in 2017"
It's pretty simple on how to handle the media and rumormill. Does that obligate him to not accept another job? No. But it does eliminate negative recruiting against us about his intentions as coach. Thats a big deal
-
I guess maybe you want him to say he will only leave Starkville in a pine box?
venit, vidimus, amisimus
-
Hopes he's learned from past mistakes...
You're blind if you can't see improvement.....Freshmens......Strain.....Kick rocks and pound sand......Drag my Yankee ass outta here!......
-
This has been my argument all along.
We have a real chance to put Miss in the rear view mirror for years. It starts today. Gotta hit that big recruiting class and keep rolling.

Agree. Here's his chance to commit. He has to recognize the significance of this off season and he absolutely has to take advantage of it.

Yep...exactly what I've been thinking. He's lost a HUGE portion of our fanbase, in part because he has not done this, with the exception of one time that I can recall, and the damage had already been done.
If he wants a big slice of us back in his corner, he needs to do exactly as RP has said.....emphatically deny interest in other programs, but also say how he intends to be here a long time, and has unfinished business, etc.
Also, like RP said, that doesn't mean he can't bail anyway...but he needs to say it to help our recruiting, and to get our players all in.

Our new AD controls it more than Dan.
-
Typically I would agree, however, we have to remember that Dan didn't get an extension last year and 5-7 this year makes it unlikely as well so he's trying to find some kind of leverage somewhere to get us to give him an extension.
-
Give him an extension for recruiting but keep the buyout the same as it is now

Exactly

He said during the postgame press conference last night that he'd be back in 2017...
-
He's already said multiple times that he'll be back in Starkville next season. As recently as last night after the game, he said something to the effect that this team needs to get mentally tougher, so he'll needs to go "old school" on them this off season and next season.
The true onus is on our fan base to not believe every stupid rumor that gets thrown out there. Every off-season, Mullen has said that he has a job and he's happy in Starkville and that he doesn't deal in rumors. Yet, every off-season, our dubmass fans jump on every rumor regarding every coaching vacancy and give them legs. What more do you want Mullen to do?

If it's not a called press conference broadcast nationwide on ESPN, it's just not enough for some.

The onus is not on the fanbase. Most of the fanbase don't get wrapped up in whether he's leaving our not. A lot of us get wrapped up in the impact it has to recruiting. Teams use that stuff against us, which is why Mullen has to address them emphatically, even if they are ridiculous.

THIS!

The reason those rumors are out there are because Mullen's agent wants them out there. I don't give a shit What Mullen says to the press. I want him to tell his agent, not the media, to lock that shit up and don't let anyone think he wants to take a job at Boston college, Maryland, Arizona, or any other school on MSU's level. If he has a shot at a big time job, then that's different. This year he won't though so there is no need for the circus.

yep, if in a couple of weeks, he's still being mentioned as a candidate, it's either because he and his agent are keeping his name in the running or because he's been interviewing. names don't stick around in the coaching carousel rumors more than a day or 2 without the coach doing something to keep his name out there.
how often do you see david shaw mentioned as an initial candidate for an open job, but never mentioned as a finalist or lingering in the discussions well into the coaching search? you don't have to make a public statement saying you'll be back at msu to get the point across. sometimes it's as simple as telling them no thanks and hanging up the phone and telling your agent to not float you name out there.

Bingo. Can't have it go out to a select few.

Mullen will be back and K. Thompson will enroll early to have an extra Spring to learn the system.
