Looking to book a spring break fishing trip on the coast.

I want to take my kids off shore fishing for spring break. We are from North MS and don't know anyone down there to contact about reliable charters. Any recommendations?

Now, when it comes to offshore the season matters more than anything. I'm not sure what the main target will be but I know its not red snapper since its out of season at that time. If you wanted to do an inshore charter for redfish, speckle trout, etc... you wouldn't have to deal with anything out of season. Now if you're not dead set on MS, I'd like to make one more suggestion. Capt T-Man Cheramie who fishes the Golden Meadow/Leeville area. He has a camp that is nice that he rents for a very reasonable price that is nice. I've stayed there a few times. I usually do 1 offshore charter a year and take the boat to Leeville once or twice a year and let T-Man guide it (But he has his own boat to guide out of). I've fished with T-Man multiple times and my dad has fished with him a ton. Thanks for the info. I'm clueless about salt water fishing and the different seasons. Need all the help I can get. I'm looking for a good time for my kids (6,9,12 and 15). We catch a lot of bream bass cats crappie but I want to get them on something a little bigger.

Be careful with offshore Charters in MS, especially the trips that are 8 hours or under. They will be mainly trolling trips and not really truly offshore. We specified an emphasis of reef/bottom fishing and only trolled the way in and it was a blast. On an inshore saltwater trip, you can still catch big fish. Last year I got a 41 inch redfish in the marsh. And if you're a fresh water guy, a 5lb redfish will pull more than the record bass in your local lake.

Just my opinion but you should give the inshore Charters a strong look. I've heard both outfits in MS and good with kids. The one advantage you'd have in LA is a relatively windy day could keep the MS outfits from crossing the sound to get to the marsh and you'd be fishing near shore in the bay (which can still be fun). In LA, you're already in the marsh and can find protected areas to fish. It would take a really adverse weather day to impact your fishing.

Beast had some good points. If your are for sure wanting to do offshore, I would go to a neighboring state - so many more options for that type of fishing. I would definitely think about doing an inshore trip. The kids would have a blast if you can get into a good trout bite and if you ask, pretty much any good captain can get you on some bull reds. If you really want a fight on light tackle, a jack cravelle will just about make you throw in the towel. If you go the inshore routes, we can give some good suggestions in any area of the gulf coast, but Beast already gave a couple solid choices.

ETA: I should clarify that there are some good offshore choices in MS, but not nearly as many (most will be out of Biloxi/OS) as AL/FL/LA. You will likely have a farther run from MS also, which is a bonus for going inshore. That said, I've never done an offshore charter in MS.

I'll echo the consideration of inshore trips with kids. Unless you have kids who are just nuts for fishing, inshore will be much more enjoyable for them. Less riding, larger variety, more strikes, and less rigorous fighting by the fish.

True. I completely understand wanting to get your kids to pull up a sea monster but a fast and furious speckle trout bite is hard to beat for a kid. Add in that big reds often come crash that party anyway.

No doubt specks and reds are fun to fight. I don't know about the Gulf, but here you are liable to hook a dang ray and spend 30 minutes fighting to just recover a lure. That can make even inshore trips exhausting.

I would look into inshore as well, especially if you're set on MS waters. If you go offshore most likely you will target Mackerel of both varieties and you don't want that. Sonny Schindler with Shore Thing Charters if you take an inshore trip. You'll get some trout and he'll put the kids on some bull reds. Also, he may be the best fisherman for the elusive Tripletail. They put up on hell of a fight on med-light tackle and is the best eating fish in the gulf.
