    Climbing Stand Height

Yo. Over the past few seasons i have mainly switched to bow hunting my deer instead of gun hunting, because gun hunting just isn't as much fun or as challenging as bow hunting.

I digress. Anyway, i use a summit goliath self climbing stand and usually climb up about 13 feet.

I have friends that climb 30 feet each time and some that go lower than my 13 feet.

To what height do you fellow climbers ascend? Thirteen seems good enough in case of a fall i won't be dangling my 250 lb ass from 30 feet in the air.

what are some pros and cons of being that high? Obviously less chance of being seen by the deer, but also feel like you would see less open area being that high up

I get 20-30 ft, just depends on how low the lowest limb is. I started out climbing that high because I dipped in the stand and I didn't want any chance of it smelling. I've since quit but still climb that height out of routine. I've also had friends shoot monsters with a cigarette in their mouths and my dad go to the stand strait from work, no camo, no scent and only 30 minutes until dark and killed really nice bucks in consecutive days out of the same tree. My point is climbing 30' isn't necessary when they're in the rut because smells don't really seem to effect them all that much.

I go anywhere from 20 to 25 feet. Like to get up high enough to get some cover and to help with the movement of drawing back.

I rarely use climbing stands anymore for bowhunting. But when I do,I try to climb between 20 to 30 feet. Anything lower then 20 and I feel like I'm in the wide open.

I prefer loc on stands when I can use them. I can get up in the limbs of a tree with a loc on for better cover.

Same here. I haven't used a climber in a long time. I would always be sweating my arse off from using a climber anyway. Maybe I just wasn't very good at it. Yes, I know that wasn't helpful for the OP at all.

Depending on elevation changes at the base of the tree in which I'm perched, 20-24'..... So, like others. ~20ish feet... 18' is my dead MIN...

I'll go higher if rifle hunting, sometimes...

I don't have to wear camo if I don't wanna and smoke cigs, sometimes... if the wind doesn't swirl, they seldom know I'm in the world....

I dig lock ons, these days....
