This Week's Bourbon Edition - Sweet Wheat

I like a good wheater, but I hate the most popular one on the market - Maker's Mark. I find it just tastes young and rushed. I have heard of the 1792 Sweet Wheat for a while now, but have not had the chance to pick one up, as they are generally sold out. Finally found one this week, and added it to the cabinet.

When I first poured this I got a distinct sour mash alcohol nose...didn't like that at all and it tarnished my first impression. I left this alone to air for a few days and have just come back to give it a real analysis. Verdict: this is good bourbon. It is smooth, very smooth. Reportedly this is about an eight year aging and at just over 90 proof it would compare commercially to Weller Special Reserve (WSR) and Weller 12 each at 90 proof.

I can tell you Weller 12 is better, but the Sweet Wheat is much better than the WSR. Definite vanilla tones, some wood notes, but the mouth feel really brings this home. Great feel on the tongue, which is one of my keys to a great whiskey.

MSRP for this bottle is in the low $30 range, and I picked it up at a private store for $40. I think it is a good buy at any price from that range, and if you see this I would rate as a definite add to your cabinet wheater selection.

My top three wheater rankings, excluding Pappy:

    Weller 12 year old
Larceny (best value at $25 as well, lacks the mouth feel that the 1792 has)
    1792 Sweet Wheat

I am really looking forward to Smooth Ambler's wheated release later this year, as they are one of my favorite distilleries. http://bourbonr.com/blog/smooth-ambl...abel-approved/

    Cheers, and Hail State!
