    MS Gulf Coast Vacations?

Yes, I know I can google and do a bunch of pointless internet research, but I hate that crap. I'm thinking of doing a vacation to the MS Gulf Coast (if it's worth it), instead of the cookie cooker beaches of Destin or Gulf Shores, and I keep the money in state. Anywhere in particular that's better than the other? I know very little about the MS Coast honestly. I gamble a little, but not a huge attraction. I'd like to play some golf, eat some good food, do some fishing, and stay is a resorty type place so I can feel like I'm a high-roller on vacation. Maybe do some boating too. Any suggestions?

Stay at the Beau. Go to Ship Island for the beaches. Play golf at Grand Bear. That's where they hold the PGA events. Eat at the Shed for BBQ. If you will drive 30 minutes for great food, go to Trampani's (sp?) in Bay St Louis for dinner. The Blind Tiger is a great burger and fry joint across the street from Trampani's too. Gamble at the Beau if you want ambience. Gamble at the Palace if you don't want smoke burning your eyes. Gamble at the little casinos if you want to win any card games.

While there, hit up happy hour in downtown Ocean Springs and Bay St Louis. Eat dinner at Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi. Hang out at Shaggy's in Biloxi for an open air place on the beach to eat and day drink.

if you want beaches, go to Gulf Shores. MS beaches just aren't that great in general, and are worse after Katrina. not that they're terrible, but the AL and FL beaches are clearly better. if you know how to read a map it's only an hour and a half extra drive, and you can stay right on the beach unlike most MS spots. but there's enough family friendly options on the MS coast if beaches aren't your primary concern. mini golf, lazer tag, etc. the only problem with kids is there's few places where i'd want to just let the kids go for the day.

the Beau is usually a good deal for the quality of room. they expect to make their money off you on the ground floor, between gambling and food. probably not the best idea with kids though.

no need to go to Bay St Louis for food. that's ridiculous. I think Tripani's is overrated anyway. Half Shell Oyster House is right by the Beau. as good as any food on the coast, at much more reasonable prices. if you really want to impress then Mary Mahoney's is right across the street. there's also plenty of good spots in Ocean Springs.

for night life go to Ocean Springs. easy cab ride.

The barrier island beaches are closer and as good as gulf shores. Trampani's is the best seafood on highway 90 from mobile to New Orleans... And out of a survey of 11 members of congress that I took there and Antoines in NOLA, all 11 of them said they liked Trapani's more.

There isn't a place to drop the kids off really. There are some water slide places, etc... though that they'll enjoy. Some of the casinos have pretty impressive game rooms for kids too.

Trapani's is top 5, but few coasties would rank it the best on the MS coast. it's fallen somewhat the last few years too. Mary Mahoney's would easily be rated the best, but is pricey. $100 for a couple. Half Shell is just a step below, but has chain prices. if you want to spend an evening in Bay St Louis, go ahead and eat there, then enjoy walking to the other bars and seeing the sights. won't be a bad night. but there's no reason to drive from the Beau just for Trapani's.

barrier islands are nice, but it's a long ride to there and there is NOTHING there but the beach. it's as far as the extra drive to Gulf Shores, and if you pick the right place there you can come back and forth to the room as you please in a few steps.

the AA stadium across from the Beau is open now too. i haven't been yet, but i'll be hitting the beer garden when the Braves AA team is in town.

i think the Island View has the lazy river back open. i may start gambling there a little, just to get comped a night so i can hit that up. the Scarlet Pearl and it's "world class" mini golf is open now too.

ETA: as an old school gamer, the casino arcades are a joke, like most "arcades" nowadays.

I used to live in Destin, so I know all about that experience. Looking for something a little different. HOWEVER, I wouldn't mind hitting up a beach for the day or something. Ship Island sounds like it might fit that bill.

    Thanks for replies.

From what I gathered, I like the idea of walking around in Ocean Springs. Can do Biloxi another night too , and maybe Bay St. Louis another (I got some friends in Waveland and like that area the few times I've been). Golf at Grand Bear during the day, go to the islands one day too. Hit the casinos if it rains, maybe.

    Any good state/national parks around?

I have had to spend a good bit of time on the coast for work, and you can definitely put together a good vacation there, especially if you're interested in a lot of different things. If you want a "beach vacation" where you go to the beach and relax every day, the Coast is not for you, but if you want variety, you can have a good time.

    Things to do:
    - Ship island (full day) - basically a little nicer than gulf shores and not as nice as destin beaches. The downside is that without your own boat, you are stuck with the fairy and limited on departure and return times and can't pop in and out of a condo throughout the day. I'd pack a cooler with drinks and lunch and take the early boat our and come back on the late boat. That's a long day but if it's your only beach day, that's not a bad thing.
    - Gulf Islands Water Park (half or full day) - it will be crowded but most water parks are. Going on a weekday will help. You also have Buccaneer state park over in waveland. Not as big but has a wave pool and a slide or two. Not sure how crowded it gets.
    - Go cart/mini golf/inflatable slides (two or three hours?) - can't remember the name of the place, but it's on 90 in Biloxi; can't miss it; has a slap your mama barbecue out front
    - Scarlet Pearl Mini golf (couple of hours?) - haven't been but supposedly a massive investment and a "world famous" mini golf architect if there is such a thing;
    - kayak/paddle board rentals - can do kayaks and paddle board rentals in gulfport lake and bay st. louis I think and there is a company that offers guided kayak tours in pascagoula
    - MGM Park for baseball game
    - usually a concert or something offered at one of the Casino's that is decent, especially if you're over 40
    - Kroc Center - has an indoor water area that would be good for a rainy day or just a couple of hours on a sunny day if you just want a relatively quick activity to fill in part of the day
    - Lazy River / Pool day - Most of the big casino's have a good pool if you just want to spend a day or afternoon lounging with drinks. Hollywood casino has a lazy river if that interests you; not sure how good it is; another good option is the Island View; it's new south tower has it's pool area open to the beach that they keep nice and clean; this also gives you the option of doing the Bridges in the morning, which is a nice golf course and then doing the pool in the afternoon. The water there isn't particularly good because it's so shallow and muddy, but it gives you the option of hanging out on the beach with a nice view and then walking up to the pool when you want to cool off and having a hotel room nearby if you want.
    - Fishing - half day or full day - for redfish/speckled trout type fishing I'd probably go with Shore thing charters; not sure about deep sea fishing Be aware that if you do deep sea fishing you'll probably spend a good bit of time traveling to a good place to fish.
golf - Fallen Oak (the Beau), Grand Bear (the Grand/Hera's), the Palace's course, the Bridges are all great courses. Fallen Oak and the Grand Bear and the Palace's course are probably the best layouts. The Bear is up for sale so not sure how well it's maintained now. You also have the Oaks and Wind Dance that are both nice courses. Great Southern is even worth playing if you just want to play with a view of the water at a place that's cheap and convenient; just can't expect too much with how the course is maintained.
Boating - you can do one of the walk on rides with the biloxi schooners or rent one of them out. There is also a charter sailing company that takes out a small sail boat; maybe 25 or 30 feet. Not sure what the other options are for boating. Not sure if there is anywhere that will just rent you a boat and most of the charters I'm aware of are geared towards fishing.

Places to stay - There are lots of good places to stay, the only problem is I'm not sure there's anywhere that wouldn't get a little stale if you stayed more than three nights. Beau, Hard Rock, IP, and Palace all give you access to good restaurants and a casino at night. It's also close to Ocean Springs where you might want to spend some nights on the town. Island View offers a very good set up with their south tower and is closer to the Ship Island Ferry and to Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian, also worth a night on the town. Hollywood offers the lazy river and a casino and an on site golf course (the only one on the coast that doesn't require a 15 to 30 minute drive to play golf). You also have the White house hotel, which is a cool set up and good location but only offers one restaurant, one bar, and a pool that is nice but nothing fancy.

Places to eat - Ocean Springs you can probably spend an afternoon walking around and drinking and is also good to go at night. Bay St. louis offers the same; it's options are a little more limited but they're still good. Gulfport probably now has as good or better downtown area at night , but won't have as much going on as Ocean Springs or Bay St. Louis if you go there for an afternoon. Trapanis, blind tiger (bay st. louis) are both good and ugly pirate is cool and cheap if not great food. In the Pass you have Hook, Bacchus, and Shaggy's (which is pretty good food for a beach place, but you'll mostly be there for the atmosphere). Long Beach has Darwell's which is neat and has been on diners and drive-ins and another place owned by Bacchus (can't remember the name); Gulfport has half Shell, Chimney's, Corks and Cleaver, two surprisingly good restaurants in the Island View (a steak hour and a seafood place) and then a number of other options (a brick oven pizza place, a honky tonk place, a wine bar, a sports pub, etc.). Gulfport is also getting a Shaggy's and Blind Tiger before the summer. Biloxi has Mary Mahoney's, a half shell, Shaggy's, the Reef, a few other beach places, Coras (in the white house hotel), some good food in the casinos and a couple of cool places down town ( a taco place, a sal and mookies, a sushi place, etc.) Ocean Springs has a ton but their restaurants seem to change a lot. Leo's (a brick oven pizza place), Chef Scott's, Phonecia, Al Fresca seem to be long lasting. There's also a really good brunch place there I can't remember the name of.

That's right on the brunch place. the taco place is voodoo cantina. Little more than a taco place I guess. Has burritos, quesadilla I think, and tamales. Pretty limited menu but good.

oh ok, thought it was a bar.

I'll add that Gulfport bar area has gone downhill, IMO. Just kept getting seedier and seedier, i avoid it now.

Haven't made it down there in a while at night. I knew the quarter had gotten a sketchy crowd which is one of the reasons I think the half-shell owner shut it down and turned it into more restaurant place and EO and Rooney's always had a little bit of a different crowd, but I didn't realize it looked any different than Ocean Springs or Bay St. Louis otherwise.

Coast can be a lot of fun if you know what to do.

    Entertainment:
Ship Island Ferry- beaches that are like Gulf Shores. Way better than 90. Rent chairs and umbrella from them. Bring drinks & food in a rolling cooler. Clean bathrooms, small store, showers, & a civil war fort on island. A fun day.

Charter Fishing- if you're doing offshore, doesn't matter where you leave from. If you're doing inshore fishing, go with an outfit from the west side out of PC or BSL. They fish the La marsh; much better.

Outlet Mall- every bit the same as Destin

Casino- gambling if that's you're thing but check for shows. Might find something you like when you're down. Center Bar on the casino floor at the Hard Rock is usually fun.

Ocean Springs- Probably my favorite concentrated area of nightlife/bars/live music is located on Gov't Streer in Ocean Springs. Also a cool area to walk around and shop during the day.

    Water Parks- (self explanatory)

    A cpl Restaurant Recs:

Bay St Louis- Trapanis and Northshore are both really good. There is a bakery in downtown BSL that is awesome. The Silver Slipper in Waveland has a crab leg Buffett and if you go Mon-Thurs, it's cheap as hell. Same exact Buffett on the weekend is twice as expensive.

Pass Christian- Hook'd and Bachus on the Beach are both good. Shaggy's is fun but food is average.

Long Beach- Harbor View Cafe for breakfast. Desserts/cakes are amazing there. Steve's at the marina is really good food. Darwell's is cheap and fun.

Gulfport- Half Shell is good and Captain Al's Steak and Shrimp is good; pecan wood pit steak.

Biloxi- all the touristy places on 90 are about the same. Food is not bad and a little overpriced. But they're laid back, fun places. Blowfly Inn for lunch. Tarrantino's for poboys. The high-end places at the casinos are all good but I rarely eat there.

    Summary

I'd stay on the East side in Biloxi or Ocean Springs. A little more to do at night. Fish on the west side. Go to ship island. Hit outlet mall. Make every dinner in a different town and check out the shops in downtown BSL & PC. Don't neglect the west side of you stay east and vice versa. I don't care for the casino hotels. There are plenty of solid options on 90 if you want to be near beach. If you want to stay on the bay or bayou, check out HomeAway.com All kinds of nice accommodation options.

ETA- my favorite 2 areas of public beach are East Beach in OC or Henderson Point in PC. Funny because they are basically opposite sides of the coast

I was down the other day and thought about adding 1 more nugget. Very few hotels on the beach. They'll mostly across 90. The one on the beach right in the middle of everything in Biloxi is south beach hotel.
