Kind of hypocritical if you ask me...

I hope they NEVER drop Rebels or Ole Miss. Really don't understand why MSU fan would.

Yeah, the State fan in me never wants them to drop it because that helps us, but the decent human being who would love to see steps toward ending Mississippi being a national joke would love them to change it.

Just me personally, but the negative connotation I receive as a Mississippian takes priority over whatever perceived recruiting edge it gives us as MSU over them. Not saying this is exactly what you were alluding to, but I've seen several posters on here mention this as a positive for us, and I don't see where it has hurt them at all from an athletic standpoint over the years.

It may take a while, but 'Rebels' and 'Ole Miss' will both be gone one day. Rebels probably before Ole Miss.

UM Fans are renouncing their rebelhood left and right.

The real question here is are they still the "flagship" considering they no longer have a flag.

I agree. I don't see the name Ole Miss or Rebels really hurting them in recruiting. The rebel flag waving at their games was starting to hurt them in recruiting and that is the reason they got rid of it.

It hurts them in recruiting. Period. The main way is that a lot of African American families in Mississippi will never be UNM fans because of it. Then when they try to recruit those kids, they are already biased away from them. Their problem is less now than 20 or 30 years ago, but it still exists.

This is why, we we have a good coach, they do a lot of recruiting out of state where there is less of a problem.

Oh, it's coming. I've talked to a few bears involved in this new generation alumni cabal and there is a reason they went with the black bear mascot. The end game is to be rid of rebel, colonel, flag, ole miss and be the Black Bears of the University of Mississippi. It will happen in the next 15 to 20 years.

Very good point. I concede. Of course, I live in Bama which is not very far off the national joke scene either. But am still and always be a Mississippian!

Seems to me they've bought, I mean recruited, some pretty highly ranked classes as of late.

I don't know why the cowards in our legislature won't solve this problem for our state. Some leaders we have. Pathetic.

I'm telling you right now, if they drop the name Ole Miss and have to go with University of Mississippi, it is going to affect their student population. Right now, more than 50% are from outside of MS. There is a difference in recruiting a student from TX or wherever to Ole Miss and Mississippi. Ole Miss fits perfectly in the perception they perpetuate that they are some type of private college. Not easy to do when you are called the University of Mississippi.

There are an awful lot of self-proclaimed moral high-grounders in regards to this issue.

I just have one question - if it weren't for black football players, would Ole Miss really give a sh*t about the flag, or their image?

I just got through reading an article about this in WTVA's Facebook page. The comments on it were pure gold.
