Too bad it's pretty much useless due to lack of fishable water. MS is just being defiant of the Fed's draconian measures much like the other states.

wow - was unaware of this ......
Mississippi waters will be open for red snapper fishing on July 4-6, 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27. In 2012 the Mississippi Legislature approved extending state waters to nine miles south of the barrier islands for fisheries management, and the law went into effect July 1, 2013.
prior to that there wasn't a lot of "state" water that held Red Snapper... this is good to see and note that someone one on the state level is working for the rec fishermen
wished I could take advantage but my weekends in July will consist of packing & moving

LA did the same and the Feds are contesting it. That water is currently areas being claimed by both the coast guard and states. It's only fair with where ms anglers have to go to fish deep water.

The Mississippi law being in effect simply means the water can be turned over at any time by vote of the Congress. Not sure if they can do it by resolution or whether an actual law has to be passed and signed by the president.

Fishing in the contested waters is not advised. If caught be ready to get your wallet out. Here's how it played out next door.

There are a few spots outside of 3 miles of the barrier islands where you can catch legal red snapper I've been told. I really don't fish for snapper often so I couldnt tell you but Ive seen pictures of fish guys said they caught lose by.

I think you mean inside of 3 miles south of the islands .... very very few places and most of those are private numbers that nobody else knows about ... bottom line is you usually have to hit the 60-70 foot depth ... a few guys I know claimed to be inside state waters at 50' but that's not the norm .... my very best number is around 8-9 miles south

Stupid question, but is the limit of 2 worth it to go out and spend a bunch of money on gas and supplies for a trip that covers many miles?
-
throw in some Grouper and a few Cobia - yeah .... but that's always a gamble. Red Snapper is going for about 20 bucks a pound.
