It's hard to be tough and scrappy when you know you're pitching staff is going to likely give up 10+ runs and blow any lead they get.

That has to feel like you're banging your head in the wall if you are a non pitcher.

The other thing that does is create an environment where it becomes pitchers vs hitters potentially and that can lead to discourse. See Slate Alford.

Then eventually there is no postseason to play for and at that point it almost becomes every man for themselves because then you're playing for a spot next year or a spot somewhere else or for the scouts to go pro.
