Bo Bounds Out of Line this morning IMO. Yeah I'm calling Bo out.

So, Hugh Hefner died. That's a shame and I hope he found Christ before hand, but it's too late one way or the other. That's not the point.

The point is that I was floored this morning listening to the Bo Bounds Show which was dedicated to the main player in the "normalizing" and "mainstreaming" of the pornography industry in the Western World, even if pornography itself has been around forever. I am also the father of one son and three daughters, one of which is still a teenager and was listening this morning waiting to go to school. She was hurt, my wife was shocked, and I was embarrassed. In myline of work I am well aware that the Jackson Metro Area is a Major hub for human trafficking, most of which is for funneling sex slaves in to the porn industry. HH did not father pornography but the modern version of the porn industry is his legacy rather than his business acumen. YOU ARE WRONG BO BOUNDS. While you are usually a pretty neat and savvy guy, you have spent too much time trying too hard. You've spent too much time thinking you are cooler than you actually are.

What you did this morning Bo Bounds was nothing short of glamourizing and promoting this industry, which exploits women and particularly young girls. It is true that HH was no Larry Flynt. But at best Hefner is neutral figure in that maybe he was not so polarizing as others were. But he was not some American Hero to gushing over and glorifying. You should have mentioned the fact that the poor fellow passed away, maybe told your story about your small connection to Playboy and then moved on from it. Dedicate your show to him and what he represents? No. And I don't believe that the majority of your listeners would agree with you. I am wondering if maybe you are not as in touch with your listening base as you think. Oh, I don't doubt your buddies and many of your business contacts might see it your way but that can be be a trapping of fame, even local fame.

And that's what Bo Bounds did no matter how he tries to dress it up as HH was such a great business man. That's like saying you read a nudie mag for the articles.

Bo tweeted you can be a Christian and love Playboy. I suppose as a factual statement you could argue that because we all like things we shouldn't and being saved doesn't mean we will be perfected in this life. Not one of us will. But a statement like that makes it sound like God would approve of Playboy Magazine. Can any Bible believing Christian really say that? I am hoping Bo was just getting snappy to some of the people that expressed their displeasure on twitter and not that he actually believes God is sitting up in heaven with HH (if he's even there) right now talking Boobies and whacking off together or some stupid crap like that.

Am I mad bro? Yes. The whole framing of this on the show this morning was inappropriate and Bo should apologize on air for it. I am giving him the chance to do so. I have not stopped listening but I may soon and contact his sponsors as well as affiliates and let them know why. And my wife may have already done so.

I've no idea what you are referring to as I don't listen to Bo Bounds (or any radio really), but if he did spend a lot of time talking about HH and Playboy it probably was a bad idea just due to the fact that we are in the buckle of the Bible Belt and Christians get frothy over that kind of stuff.

Agreed. Bo could have made a few passing coments, and that was enough. Hugh may have been seen as a god for many men, however for a sports show to glamorize pornography and promote its tolerance within Christianity is wrong.

You're entitled to your opinion on Hugh Hefner but to make some jump from Hefner to Bo Bounds to sex trafficking is crazy. You're acting like Hefner is Larry Flint and they aren't even close to being similar. Literally every news outlet reported Hefner's death and 99% of them had a positive spin. And let's be real here, if you're that moralistic of a Christian and this gets you that triggered, why are you listening to Bo in the first place? He's talked about booze and women for 15 years. Where you been?

I can agree with this. That said, I'm a Christian and I listened and was never triggered at any moment. Maybe I'm laid back or something. To me it was just another day of Bo doing "The Y'all Lifestyle" he's been doing for years. Women, booze, and cigars.

You can't compare booze to porn. God clearly would not approve of the latter and is at worst silent on the former. There is no scripture that states we should not consume alchohol and even implies some consumption is normal as Jesus turned water into wine for the wedding at Cana. The only advise offered in scripture is that it is better to be filled with the Holy Spirit than that kind of "Spirit." The way to put this would be it isn't a sin to drink but be careful about intoxication. Drinking isn't a sin bit getting drunk will probably help you slip down that path.

You're probably right here. I don't think Bo was trying to be offensive or anything but took the fun too far. It was very inappropriate to glamorize the lifestyle of HH and tell us to "spare me the moralistic crap."

Just to throw this out there, drinking is no worse than overeating which the USA is pretty good at both. All that said, if Bo did dedicate a large portion of his show then that is pretty dumb. I could understand a few minutes but like someone else said, Jackson is in the buckle of the Bible Belt.

Well bo got you talking about his show... I have no idea what he talks about most everyday, so he'd probably count that as a win.

For those who don't want to click on the NY Times article, here it is:

Hugh Hefner, gone to his reward at the age of 91, was a pornographer and chauvinist who got rich on masturbation, consumerism and the exploitation of women, aged into a leering grotesque in a captain’s hat, and died a pack rat in a decaying manse where porn blared during his pathetic orgies.

Hef was the grinning pimp of the sexual revolution, with quaaludes for the ladies and Viagra for himself — a father of smut addictions and eating disorders, abortions and divorce and syphilis, a pretentious huckster who published Updike stories no one read while doing flesh procurement for celebrities, a revolutionary whose revolution chiefly benefited men much like himself.

The arc of his life vindicated his moral critics, conservative and feminist: What began with talk of jazz and Picasso and other signifiers of good taste ended in a sleazy decrepitude that would have been pitiable if it wasn’t still so exploitative.

Early Hef had a pipe and suit and a highbrow reference for every occasion; he even claimed to have a philosophy, that final refuge of the scoundrel. But late Hef was a lecherous, low-brow Peter Pan, playing at perpetual boyhood — ice cream for breakfast, pajamas all day — while bodyguards shooed male celebrities away from his paid harem and the skull grinned beneath his papery skin.


This late phase was prettied up by reality television’s “The Girls Next Door,” which kept the orgies offstage and relied on the girlfriends’ mix of desperation, boredom and charisma for its strange appeal. The behind-the-scenes accounts were rather grimmer: depression and drugs, “dirty hallway carpets and the curtains that smell like dog piss,” the chance to wait while Hef “picked the dog poo off the carpet — and then ask for our allowance.”

Needless to say the obituaries for Hefner, even if they acknowledge the seaminess, have been full of encomia for his great deeds: Hef the vanquisher of puritanism, Hef the political progressive, Hef the great businessman and all the rest. There are even conservative appreciations, arguing that for all his faults Hef was an entrepreneur who appreciated the finer things in life and celebrated la difference.

What a lot of garbage. Sure, Hefner supported some good causes and published some good writers. But his good deeds and aesthetic aspirations were ultimately incidental to his legacy — a gloss over his flesh-peddling, smeared like Vaseline on a pornographer’s lens. The things that were distinctively Hefnerian, that made him influential and important, were all rotten, and to the extent they were part of stories that people tend to celebrate, they showed the rot in larger things as well.


His success as a businessman showed the rotten side of capitalism — the side that exploits appetites for money, that feeds leech-like on our vices, that dissolves family and religion while promising that consumption will fill the void they leave behind.

The social liberalism he championed was the rotten and self-interested sort, a liberalism of male and upper-class privilege, in which the strong and beautiful and rich take their pleasure at the expense of the vulnerable and poor and not-yet-born.

The online future his career anticipated was the rotten side of the internet — the realms of onanism and custom-tailored erotica, where the male vanity and entitlement he indulged has curdled into resentment and misogyny.

And his appreciation of male-female difference was rotten, too — the leering predatory sort of appreciation, the Cosby-Clinton-Trump sort, the sort that nicknames quaaludes “thigh openers” and expects the girls to laugh, the sort that prefers breast implants to female intellect and rents the charms of youth to escape the realities of age.


No doubt what Hefner offered America somebody else would have offered in his place, and the changes he helped hasten would have come rushing in without him.

But in every way that mattered he made those changes worse, our culture coarser and crueler and more sterile than liberalism or feminism or freedom of speech required. And in every way that mattered his life story proved that we were wrong to listen to him, because at the end of the long slide lay only a degraded, priapic senility, or the desperate gaiety of Prince Prospero’s court with the Red Death at the door.

Now that death has taken him, we should examine our own sins. Liberals should ask why their crusade for freedom and equality found itself with such a captain, and what his legacy says about their cause. Conservatives should ask how their crusade for faith and family and community ended up so Hefnerian itself — with a conservative news network that seems to have been run on Playboy Mansion principles and a conservative party that just elected a playboy as our president.

You can find these questions being asked, but they are counterpoints and minor themes. That this should be the case, that only prudish Christians and spoilsport feminists are willing to say that the man was obviously wicked and destructive, is itself a reminder that the rot Hugh Hefner spread goes very, very deep.
