Here's my problem with the SEC and MSU AD

First of all our QB was hurt on a cheap shot. That game got completely out of hand because of the incompetence of the officials. How were those officials penalized or reprimanded? They were punished by getting to officiate the SEC Championship Game. Did Dan Mullen stick up for our players? No. If MSU did anything it was definitely behind the scenes.


Secondly now you have this situation with Nick Weatherspoon. You have a player down for 14 seconds and then he gets jumped on because the officials didn't stop play when they should have. It was so egregious, even Tennessee fans thought it was terrible. This situation was even worse because Nick could have been seriously injured to the point where his life would have been dramatically affected. What does the SEC do? They take up for the irresponsible out of line officials who should have been suspended for incompetence. What does John Cohen do? He puts out something out about how he is 100% sure that Greg Sankey is all about player safety paraphrased.

What's next? I guess we'll take it up the ass again when some guy for LSU throws at Jake Mangum or Tanner Allen's head and the umpire doesn't do anything about it. Maybe.

MSU needs to stand up for our players even if it means the school gets penalized monetarily. I'm tired of the SEC bullying us and not protecting our players. It's absolutely unacceptable that our AD just seems to "go along with it" so we won't rock the boat at the expense of our players safety. It's absolutely unacceptable that the SEC has incredibly incompetent officials that they pander to because they are part of the GOB network. Most officials that have even a shred of pride want to do their job well. And when the SEC doesn't do anything when officials perform poorly it sends the wrong message to them that they are doing a good job. It also creates a sense of entitlement since the penalty for arguing with them about their ridiculous bullshit is excessive to both the school and the coach. And if the SEC gives me the "Well the officials are just fans who have real jobs and love the game more than you ever will!" line of bullshit- I say this- if I loved a sport that much to the point where I wanted to get involved with it at that level you better damn well believe that I would do and want the conference to support maximizing my performance so that I could be the best that I could be. Dear SEC- I know this a novel idea but actually doing things that hold you officials accountable in all sports actually improves your overall product. It works for pro sports anyway.

Is this your 'first' year as a MSU fan? When has MSU EVER gotten a fair shake from the SEC HQ? In fact, to me .. LT has done MORE to hamper MSU @ the SEC HQ than help. If anyone knows where he has 'helped' .. would like to hear it.

Remember when Slive was at the Hump and Jarvis Varnado set the record for rebounds. Slive NEVER even stood, much less clapped. He never even smiled. Remember the time Vandy coach Stallings accused MSU players of trying to take out his best player? Total lie and was 'proved' to be a total lie. Zero response from SEC.

Don't think you and I know I, have ZERO idea what IB or Keenum has done behind the scenes and I deeply hope they are raising hell in Birmingham. And, I do agree that both should be more vocal publically .. when player safety is at risk.

BUT, i'm over 60 and the ONLY call I can really remember that has gone MSU's way is the current cowbell rule.

It?s really good in theory to have an AD that blasts a commissioner in public. Reality is that it?s a death sentence to do that. Not a damn bit of good would ever come from that. What happened to Nick was awful. But blasting the league in public? That?s just not smart.

MSU will never recover from the damage LT did to our athletics program....never.

You don't have to blast Sankey, there are ways to let it be known that you are not John Templeton Cohen and that you have a pair. The statement put out by Templeton Cohen reeked of a lack of backbone.

This is not a good idea

We have plenty of problems but this is not one

Officiating problem is incompetence, pure and simple

I agree, but I don't see how you could ever prove intent. That is basically what you would have to do. I too thought the high low shot on Fitz was intentional as well as the same attempt on KT later in the game by the same OM players. As for this past weekend in St. Louis, there is absolutely no excuse for what happened to Nick. Those officials should be removed from calling SEC games, period. The problem with that would mean the conference would have to fire or suspend them. If they did that, then they are admitting those REF's were wrong and that leaves them open to a lawsuit as well as public scrutiny.

"Forget" to provide security escort, or to clear the path for their van, the next time they throw a game. A hair raising escape from angry fans, and the promise of a repeat, will go a long way to evening out the calls.

More responsible answer: ask for what you want behind the scenes, which will be denied in banal corporate speak. Find a way to make officials have to "run the guantlet" thru our fans after games. When the league demands we change that....repeat their banal corporate speak back to them word for word. The message will get across, with full deniability, to both the league and the officials.

I wouldn't publicly admonish Sankey but I would have loved to see Mullen or Howland publicly go after the officials, in a classy way, after the games. It would go viral that they are defending their players and guess what... When they get their fine, $10k or whatever, pay it with the multi-million contracts we gave you.

I believe, and this is on pretty good authority, that the SEC office asked Luke to have the players apologize after the Egg Bowl. MSU absolutely complained about how they played that game and that was the payback. Any further "payback" would simply be life karma. I'm a big believer in reaping what you sow and the energy you put in is what you get back.

This is all I really want to see happen. I just want to see MSU stand up for our players. Even if it costs us 10K. And you are correct about the Egg Bowl apologies. I forgot about that- kudos to MSU and Cohen for at least forcing that.

I don't even care if they publically admonish or suspend the officials. It's just that the SEC takes up for them way too much and it makes them part of the problem too. I know in MLB that there have been managers and players ejected from a game wrongly and if the umpire was in the wrong the manager and player are sometimes not even suspended or fined and the umpire is. But it's rarely done in public. The SEC can and should do the same thing instead of blindly taking up for their incompetent officials every time they screw up- which is weekly.

While I agree you can't totally "prove intent"- I think we all would agree that diving at someone's ankles that is already being engaged by a tackler high is a safety risk and very poor form. And as it is a safety risk- even if a broken leg/ankle isn't as life threatening as a brain injury is- there should be a penalty for that. It's not much different than a chop block in terms of risk/danger- just on the other side of the ball.

I think the SEC is actually more negligent by letting the refs continue to ref.

Here's an idea, a little bit of players self policing the field. I never saw any type of standing up to the crap UNM was pulling at Egg Bowl. Knock the *&^( out of someone and get their attention.
