Some people don't realize that reporting all the secondary stuff is how we keep from getting into trouble with the NCAA . Not sure how anyone can assume malicious intent from you and SDN reporting the facts. Every school (well except maybe one) reports these kinda things.
"It was all men's track and volleyball!!!! Everything happened under Croom!!!"
Am I doing it right OM fans? And click an ad before you leave.
Joking aside can someone explain the trophy violation?
During MSU’s Junior Day, an impermissible display was set up in the Gridiron Club at Davis Wade Stadium. The display featured the Egg Bowl and St. Petersburg Bowl trophies. Even though both trophies are often displayed around campus, the Gridiron Club wasn’t one of the sites the trophies had been displayed. MSU self-imposed penalties including rules education and a letter of admonishment. The SEC accepted MSU’s self-imposed penalties.
Why is that a violation? I don't understand what the competitive advantage could be.
But it seems that all media outlets in the state of MS are just leaning on AP stuff for this case. How in the world has a Mississippi journalist not latched on to this story?? This is the type of story that can make a career and win a news outlet national awards. It's probably going to be the biggest story in the history of Mississippi sports. And every...single...news outlet in the state has "passed" on it. And, in my opinion, just about any sports journalist in the state has a right to expound on it because this whole thing will have ended up impacting every college in the State of Mississippi and many surrounding schools. Also, why will no one comment on the C-L??? Lol.
I think it's pretty ironic that we are all pissed that the CL is not reporting facts with OM but have a problem with someone at another paper reporting facts. JTC does a great job. It is not like he created these violations. Do you even know what a damn reporter is?
Fair enough. My response was overly harsh and I didn't intend to disparage actual work quality of yourself or others at the SDN, so I apologize for that. And I do realize these types of stories are standard reporting, but nevertheless I've come to expect them from the C-L and other out of town outlets over the years, and I've always felt they were pretty mundane as far as stories go. Secondary violations are pretty much a dime a dozen at every school (therefore almost non-stories). I don't recall the SDN running these types of stories in the past, nor the Oxford paper running similar stories about OM.
I am glad to know we are at least diligently reporting everything to the NCAA, especially with the current climate in MS. And I did certainly learn of certain things that I had no idea were violations. So, from a factual standpoint it was a well written article, even though I personally find the content to be a little bit irrelevant to most news seekers (regardless of school affiliation).
2 things
1. You & anyone else are welcome to call me whatever you like. I can assure you that I don't care. As for 'stalking posts', I dare say I've been reading here and elsewhere far longer than many of you. My background isn't exactly a secret when it comes to who I rooted for since birth.
2. I posted because there is about 10% of this fan base and every fan base that has no clue how journalism works. If you work at a news outlet, you're not a mouthpiece for the school. Unless MSU wants to employ me to pump sunshine, myself and every other beat writer has a job to report on all situations, from the good to the bad to the stupid. I don't get why there are so many that fail to understand that. As much as many folks want to believe beat writers are 'out to get their school', the fact is the vast majority of us just want to do good jobs for the people that pay us. And by the way, you want to know which stories get read more by a VERY wide margin? (Hint: It's not the happy, smiley player features). So the very people who complain about stuff like these minor violations getting reported are darn sure reading to see what they are. Why? Because it's news you can't find anywhere else. The school sure isn't going to volunteer it. That's the point of our job - to keep you informed.
JTC, you'll never win with the fans just because of the nature of your job. But the JS articles help, a lot. There's not a lot of friendly press for State. I think you'll admit that many of the major news outlets in MS are reluctant to report bad news for OM. Publications don't have that hesitancy reporting bad news for State.
Everyone else, don't pick fights with a man that buys ink by the barrel.
That's the problem, the media now decides what it wants to put out there. By doing this they circumvent the truth and then they are forced to stick to a narrative to avoid looking like the liars hey are. You wanna know who the Socialists and Communist got rid of first, anyone who would tell the truth.
That illegal display of the EB trophy is easy.
Dan shoved it up Freeze's ass.
Interesting that y'all decided to run it the day Dan was at media days.
If you look at it one way, this was a sunshine piece. We learned there are some random rules that we somehow broke. We actually penalized ourselves unlike other universities in Our State, and the NCAA accepted those penalties. Nothing to see here. It is like getting a speeding ticket and just paying the fine. It isn't a big deal.
For all you bear trolls, this is what exemplary cooperation looks like.
