He was a hoss.
Seen some old film of him with the Bears and he was a hard, hitting, mean son of a gun. I saw Dick Butkus in an interview talk about how hard Joe hit and how intense he was coaching. Well earned honor and probably should have been done sooner.
Dang he should've been the first.
Wonder what took this so long?
I'm baffled and pissed off about this. I know probably some of this may be my fault but why the 17 am I just now learning about this guy?
maybe there's something I'm missing but this appears to be another one of those "this is why we can't have nice things" kind of a deal.
Joe was a beast at MSU and in the NFL. Very well respected in Chicago and by his peers in the NFL. Butkus learned a ton from him. It?s over due but it looks like Cohen is trying to correct some of these type things.
there's no excuse for this to have not been done before. glad it's being done FINALLY but has he ever been interviewed during one of our games? this is the type of guy one of the cigar boys should be driving to our games and sitting in a luxury seat and fed well all free of charge.
Hope he's not having to drive himself up there. dude's prolly getting on up there. I'd give my left nut to drive that guy up the Trace. Please MSU, PLEASE quit 17ing our nice things up. Please treat this guy like the MSU Nobility he is. he should be taken in a limo , escorted to the luxury suites and embellished with wine, women and song.
Fortunate should be in the NFL HOF as well. He's overlooked there also. Until recently MSU was not very good about promoting it's football players. Heck, Smoot for Heisman was a fan run campaign. It's sad and embarrassing but at least it's getting better.
Heck I'm from Biloxi and I remember hearing of him back in the 70's. Thought he had something to do with Natchez Cathedral. He was living in Natchez then.
Can confirm Natchez.
Mr. Fortunato is still in Natchez. And I agree, that he should have been considered for the first installation of this honor.
I've always beamed with a little pride at his accomplishments, having lived in the same town. And with his daughter being a high school/college friend of mine, I feel happy for her as well.
