A mission to reignite the sun? I can't get past that.

If you like sci-fi, Primer. Indie movie made by engineers for a few thousand bucks.

I disagree: I'm a big Danny Boyle fan, but I agree about Primer. It's amazing.

Other flicks I'm a huge fan of:

Blade Runner: probably one of the best science fiction movies of all time. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Han Solo. It's not nearly as popular as it should be in the annals of cinema.

Children of Men: easily one of my favorite films.

Closer: a gut-wrencher of a film for "hopeless romantics"

A Life Less Ordinary: another Danny Boyle film, and stars a hilarious Ewan Mcgregor

Clerks: or any other film by Kevin Smith, actually

The Saint: Val Kilmer at his best

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: Guy Richie's first film. If you loved Snatch, you'd love this one too.

Last of the Mohicans

Dark Crystal

The Thing (1982 version)

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

I could literally go on and on. I love threads like these, tho. Nice one, 61.

I thought it was worthy of some Oscar consideration. Was actually disappointed it wasn't mentioned during the build up. it was the best movie I had seen all year... but it wasn't promoted like a whore and it didn't have any sympathetic political angle, so it wasn't in the running.

Out of the Furnace was great till the last 20 minutes. I thought the ending sucked ass. Scene with Affleck and Woody is hilarious. Had to watch that part again. This movie had great cinematography which I am a sucker for.

Yea I know but I had to give it some recognition. The movie is so quiet. It's masterful in adding suspense to it. I really can't think of another movie that so beautifully uses sound or lack there of to make a movie so suspenseful. Please name me more of them.

You should watch Children on Men if you haven't. Also the film that just came out, Under the Skin, has a lot of that "brooding" ambiance you'd probably like.

Some more:

Eastern Promises

Blue Velvet

Heat

Good Will Hunting

Green Street Hooligans (and if you soccer fans like that, you should also check out Cass, which is also about West Ham, and The Firm (1989), also about the original West Ham firm, ICF [inner city firm], starring Gary Oldman)

White Squall

Sexy Beast (easily one of Ben Kingsley's best roles)

Dr. Strange Love

Mean Streets

Saw it when it first came out, I need to watch it again. A lot of people brought it up when True Detective ran the scene that is shot all in one take by one camera. Apparently Children of Men has something like a 12 minute scene like that as well.

Love Boondocks. The sequel was atrocious. You should watch the documentary "over night". It's basically the rise and fall of Boondocks director Troy Duffy. He is a complete lunatic, and mostly an ass hole the entire time.

I agree on Snatch. It's one of my favorite movies. If you like Snatch, you should watch Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It's a similar style of British/crime/comedy, also directed by Guy Ritchie.

Super Troopers is the shit. I love that and Beerfest with a fervor.

I do also like Donnie Brasco, but not as much as Pass, apparently, lol. In my opinion, the best gangster (Italian) flick ranking goes like this:

1a. The Godfather Pt. 1
1b . The Godfather Pt. 2
2. Goodfellas
3. Mean Streets
4. Donnie Brasco
5. The Untouchables

Have we morphed from a "not well known" movie thread, to just "our favorite movies", lol?

I love Se7en; I'm surprised I forgot it. David Fincher is one of my favorite directors.

And I love Black Hawk Down. Directed by Ridley Scott, who is probably my favorite, with a slight lead on Michael Mann, who directed Collateral; easily one of Tom Cruises greatest roles.

All of these, maybe with the exception of Collateral, were all publicized a ton during their time.

I guess my semi recent movie that was a lot of fun that no critics gave a shit about and no one saw is Hot tub time machine. I have a soft spot for well done comedies and I expected literally nothing from this movie and it turned out funny.

Just noticing the thread and can't sleep. Long list, but worthwhile movies from my lifetime!! I know some won awards or were recognized, but I feel like none of these got the wider appeal that they deserved and if you haven't seen anything here, it's a worthwhile list to explore!

Boyhood - This is in indie theatres now and is an amazing movie. Chronicles a boy growing up and was actually filmed over 12 years with same actors. Linklater is a genius.
Tape
Before Sunset - these last two are two more Richard Linklater films that are shot in realtime. More fascinating pieces of art with a style different than you've seen before.
Primer - Saw this mentioned earlier and I'm glad. GREAT movie and mindbender. Will give you headaches.
Mud - M McCaugnahey's best role in my opinion. Great southern gothic type piece with literary undertones.
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Another great southern film focusing on life in rural Louisiana around a hurricane. Pretty powerful.
All the Real Girls - David Gordon Green film from back when he was doing serious work. Similar in style to the last two in that it's an art-style southern film. You'll recognize some faces in this one!
Original "Old Boy" - this is in subtitles and probably 10 years old now, but it is fantastic. Best revenge movie ever made.
Three Kings - this one was directed by David Russell and saw national appeal but is largely forgotten. Eye opening film on war and a gripping piece. Features Clooney + Wahlberg
Moonrise Kingdom - this is my favorite of the Wes Anderson films. Great performances all around. Rushmore and Budapest round out his top 3.

More

Her - this saw mainstream success but was one of the most original movies Ive ever seen and was thoroughly enjoyable. Watch it if you havent
Midnight in Paris - Owen Wilson movie set in France from a few years ago. Vibrant film with a lot of life.
Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Practically Forest Gump 2 with different characters. Still highly enjoyable, though long
Junebug - I seem to like movies that explore the southern way of life, but this was another great one. Amy Adams bursts on to the scene in this one.
Scent of a Woman - Hoooo haahh!
